The certificates have different scopes. To find out how the chicken is slaughtered, you have to go beyond the name on the box. Maple Lodge Farms says it stuns the birds with gas before they reach the blade. [Company’s process]() · [Company’s FAQ](). What is certified? The Canadian Halal Food Certifying Agency (CHFCA) names four facilities and covers Zabiha Halal products bearing its logo through December 31, 2026. The Halal Monitoring Organization (HMO) covers fresh and processed chicken under the brand through December 31, 2027, without naming plants. [See both certificates](). Why do two certifiers sign?CHFCA’s poultry rules and HMO’s published 2019 conditions both permit a rotating knife. A third organization, the Halal Monitoring Authority (HMA), requires the person saying God’s name to cut each bird by hand. [Compare the three standards and see HMA’s own report]() · [Certification fees]() · [The president’s franchise history](). Why do scholars disagree? After a plant visit, Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi concluded that the arrangements he checked met the Shi‘a rules he applied. Mufti Faisal al-Mahmudi, working from the company’s and certifier’s descriptions, questioned how one worker’s action could count as the slaughter of each successive bird. [Who starts the blade?]() · [Compare the religious views]() · [See the Maple Lodge rulings](). Whose ruling should I follow? If your practice requires a hand cut for each bird, the brand describes a different method. If you follow a ruling that permits mechanical slaughter under conditions, the questions are who operates the blade, when the prayer is said and whether the bird survives the stun. [What to do when scholars disagree](). What gas is used?Maple Lodge researchers described carbon dioxide (CO₂). The bird breathes it before the cut. The study measured signs of life, including a pulse, and did not test gas levels in the meat. [What CO₂ does to the bird and what matters when eating the chicken](). Do countries agree?Brunei’s halal standard requires a hand cut. Türkiye’s religious council accepts a machine cut if its conditions are met. Indonesia’s domestic slaughterhouse rule and halal certification guidance address the two methods differently. [Compare 11 Muslim-majority countries](). What else is made at these plants? Two chicken bologna wrappers, one Zabiha Halal and one Maple Lodge Farms Original, carry the same Brampton plant number, 285. The Berwick plant processed chicken and turkey. We found no public evidence of pork in Zabiha Halal chicken. The federal recalls we found concerned bacteria, bone fragments or undeclared pea protein. [See the plant records and recalls]() · [See the May family’s other businesses](). What is still unclear? The public documents give no current speed for each line, timed record of the invocation for an entire shift, or account of an outside inspector stopping a line. Zabiha Halal says the May family owns Maple Lodge Farms and describes the company as non-Muslim-owned. It identifies its halal relations manager, brand manager and the workers who recite at slaughter as Muslim. We could not independently verify the religious affiliation of Maple Lodge Farms’ current owners. The corporate filings document who controls the business. For consumers who look to Muslim oversight for assurance, the practical question is who can reject a batch. [Zabiha Halal’s FAQ](). The active Ontario corporation is Maple Lodge Farms Ltd., number 1000743690, with a registry date of December 31, 2023. Older entries bear the same name. The company’s board-approved report describes a privately held business selling through retail and food service. Statistics Canada’s 2025 ownership directory identifies Maple Lodge Holding Corporation as holding 100% of the voting rights in Maple Lodge Farms Ltd. Bob May Family Holding Corporation and Jack May Family Holding Corporation each hold 50% of the parent’s voting rights. [Statistics Canada’s 2025 directory]() · [How voting rights are recorded](). CHFCA’s certificate runs through December 31, 2026 and applies to Zabiha Halal products bearing its logo. HMO certificate J-333 runs through December 31, 2027 and covers the brand’s fresh and processed chicken. It names no plants and does not cover beef. HMO’s public document does not assign products to a particular slaughter or packing site. [HMO scope](). These connections show three different relationships. A certifier signs a document, a company owns a brand and a licensed operator runs a plant. Maple Lodge describes Mississauga as a further-processing plant and distribution centre. A shopper can identify the company that finished a product and still need the lot record to learn where the bird was slaughtered. A separate CHFCA document named Grand River Foods in Cambridge as a processor of branded poultry until April 24, 2026. Its subsequent status was not verified. [Corporate report, section 2]() · [Historical Cambridge certificate](). ## What else is made in these factories? Is there evidence of cross-contamination? **Several products can be traced to the same buildings.** Historical wrappers for Zabiha Halal Chicken Bologna and Maple Lodge Farms Original Chicken Bologna both show Brampton establishment **285**. Eden Valley reported processing chicken and turkey at its Berwick plant. We found no published inspection finding, recall or laboratory result documenting pork in Zabiha Halal chicken. The building has a documented pork-processing history. Maple Leaf Foods agreed to sell its Berwick assets in 2011. Chicken Farmers of Canada reported in 2012 that the former pork plant had undergone an equipment overhaul and opened for poultry. Neither record assigns a branded product to a particular line. [Ontario site record]() · [CFIA establishment 256](). - **Saint-François, New Brunswick · establishment 248.** Nadeau dates its acquisition by Maple Lodge Farms to 1989. CFIA now lists Maple Lodge Farms Ltd. at the site for poultry slaughter, cutting and further processing. The register does not list individual products. We searched Canada’s recall database, including archived notices, for “Zabiha” and “Maple Lodge” on November 1, 2026. Three historical records named the brands. Each identifies a specific hazard. None reports pork or a mix-up between halal and non-certified chicken. A brand-name search can miss records filed under another name. [Search for Zabiha]() · [Search for Maple Lodge](). - **2012 · bacteria in a beef supplier’s plant.** CFIA’s March 19 list puts Zabiha Halal Beef Burgers (907 g), Maple Lodge Farms Halal Beef Burgers (4.54 kg) and no name 12 Beef Burgers (1.36 kg) at New Food Classics, establishment 761 in Saskatoon. This is direct evidence of one factory producing several brands of beef burgers. CFIA found *E. coli* O157:H7 in samples from several production days. Its final report does not identify either halal-branded burger as a positive sample. The supplier stopped production in February 2012. [CFIA product list under establishment 761]() · [Closed federal investigation](). - **2017 · possible bone fragments.** CFIA’s August 11 notice names both brands’ Big Original Chicken Frankfurters, 450 g, marked 2017.AU.27. One injury was reported across the recalled products. [CFIA notice and package photos](). - **2022 · undeclared pea protein.** Both brands’ 450 g Original Chicken Wieners with best-before dates from June 30 through September 28, 2022, and five lots of Zabiha Halal Corn Dogs contained pea protein missing from the label. One reaction was reported. The notice does not say the protein got there through shared equipment. [CFIA’s July 21 notice, lot list and package photos](). ### How are halal and non-certified products kept apart? Zabiha Halal says it uses codes to track halal meat, carries out random checks and separates groups of birds its certifiers reject. It does not publish the production schedule, equipment-cleaning record or certifier’s inspection log for a shopper’s lot. We asked Maple Lodge which operations share equipment and how it verifies separation and third-party supply. [Company’s explanation]() · [Request for comment](). For a specific pack, the lot code and plant number are the starting point. A record of what ran on the line immediately before that lot, how workers cleaned it between runs, and who verified the changeover would answer the equipment question. A pork DNA test could address pork in the sample tested. It could not tell how a chicken was slaughtered. [CFIA on preventing cross-contamination]() · [Sources and limits of this finding](). ## Read the evidence on the certificates The excerpts show the addresses, product wording and dates on the two certificates posted by Zabiha Halal. Each original includes the full text and signatures. Signed certificate · CHFCA ### The four facilities on CHFCA’s certificate CHFCA’s list includes the Mississauga further-processing facility. A plant on this list need not be where the bird was slaughtered. [Open the CHFCA original](). Signed certificate · HMO ### A product category, without a plant list HMO’s wording covers fresh and processed chicken. It gives no slaughter site for an individual package. [Open the HMO original](). ## Who starts the blade and who says Bismillah when it cuts? In the company’s account, at least three Muslim employees work on a line, with a backup. They take turns saying the invocation aloud as each bird reaches the rotating blade. Its FAQ specifically says it has never used a CD or cassette to bless chickens at its facility. It describes a cut through the neck passages, jugular veins and carotid arteries, leaving the head attached. Staff check for unsuitable birds and monitor heartbeat, movement and blood flow. The company says it codes halal products separately and segregates a group if the certifier finds it fails the standard. [Brand process]() · [Slaughter and segregation FAQ](). The company says each bird is blessed. Its public account gives no current line speed or timed observation of complete invocations against successive cuts. A company representative described a rate of 140 birds per minute per line in 2003. The available records do not say whether a pause in recitation stops the conveyor today or how often an inspector witnesses a restart. [2003 interview]() · [Current public description](). ### Does Maple Lodge publish who switches on the blade for each batch? In a company letter reproduced in June 2023, Latif Mirza, then identified as Manager Halal Compliance and Community Support, wrote that “the blesser starts the processing line” while reciting God’s name. The letter describes several Muslim workers continuing the prayer during production and a backup slaughterer. Starting the processing line and switching on a separate blade motor are different actions. The letter does not say whether one switch controls both. [Read point 2 and the signature in the original letter]() · [Publication date and provenance](). What happens when the worker saying the prayer takes a break? On a 2014 visit, Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi found that a relief worker took over the prayer while the machine kept running. The relief worker had not helped start it. In November 2018, Rizvi wrote that HMO had assured him the lead and relief workers now started the machine together. HMO’s archived 2019 rules say a relief worker who takes over the prayer must have participated in startup. In February 2023, Rizvi reaffirmed his assessment after another visit and spot checks. His account does not describe every restart. [Rizvi’s signed accounts of both visits]() · [HMO’s archived conditions](). The brand’s current FAQ describes continuous slaughter and workers taking turns to recite as each bird reaches the blade. It does not say that a new batch or package lot triggers a fresh start. We asked Maple Lodge who starts and restarts the rotary blade and who says the prayer. A dated shift log could link a lot to the people responsible at startup and after any interruption, even if it identified workers only by role. [Current producer FAQ]() · [Request for comment]() · [Operator evidence and dates](). ### What can a heartbeat check tell us? Four Maple Lodge employees tested a practical question in a 2022 peer-reviewed study. Could a pulse oximeter distinguish a bird that had been stunned from one that had already died? The researchers detected a pulse in all six stunned birds tested with the device. They did not leave the birds uncut to see whether they recovered. [Goncalves and colleagues, full study and disclosures](). Published measurements · 2022 ### Where the pulse oximeter detected a pulse **Conscious birds****2 of 2****Stunned birds****6 of 6****Dead on arrival****0 of 5** The researchers used the pulse oximeter on 13 of 18 birds. The sample is too small to estimate a plant-wide survival rate. [Goncalves and colleagues, methods and Table 2](). ## Who makes the cut by hand or by machine? Hand slaughter A slaughterer takes a knife to one bird. In HMA’s standard the person performing that cut invokes God for that bird. [HMA poultry criteria](). Mechanical slaughter One operator can start a blade that cuts a succession of birds. Scholars differ on whose intention and spoken invocation count for the next bird and what must happen on a restart. [IIFA’s ruling]() · [Al-Mahmudi’s reasoning](). [Where can machine-cut chicken qualify as halal?]() ## What gas stuns the chickens, and what does it mean for the bird and the person eating it? **Carbon dioxide (CO₂)** is the gas identified in a 2022 study by four Maple Lodge Farms employees. The birds spent about a minute in each of five chambers. The average concentration of CO₂ in the air rose from 13.6% in the first chamber to 72.2% in the last. Zabiha Halal confirms it uses gas stunning. Its public description gives no gas mixture or settings for each plant, and the study does not name the slaughter site. [Zabiha Halal’s process]() · [Goncalves and colleagues, study methods](). ### What does the bird experience? As the bird breathes the gas, carbon dioxide builds up in its blood and it gradually loses consciousness. Before that happens, chickens can gasp or shake their heads. Poultry researchers have observed signs of airway irritation and breathlessness during this stage. How long a bird is exposed, and at what concentration, affects whether it could wake up if removed and left uncut or whether the gas itself kills it. Zabiha Halal describes its stun as painless. The 2022 Maple Lodge study measured signs of life and did not measure pain during the stun. [CFIA on gas concentration and exposure]() · [EFSA’s poultry welfare assessment]() · [Experimental study of broiler behaviour]() · [Producer’s account](). ### What does a heartbeat tell us about halal slaughter? A pulse shows that blood was circulating when the researchers took the reading. CHFCA’s poultry standard requires a bird to be alive and either conscious or able to recover immediately before the cut. Establishing recovery would require observing what happens when a stunned bird is left uncut. A bird that dies from the gas before its throat is cut fails that requirement. Original explanatory diagram based on Canadian regulatory guidance. It shows the points where records matter. It does not depict any particular plant. [CFIA on gas stunning]() · [CFIA’s poultry slaughter guidance](). ### Does CO₂ stunning affect the safety or quality of the meat? **Food safety.** The high CO₂ percentages describe the air that the live bird breathed. The Maple Lodge study did not measure gas in the fillet. We found no evidence that eating chicken stunned this way poses a CO₂ poisoning risk. Concentrated CO₂ is hazardous to *breathe*. For someone preparing raw chicken, the documented risks include *Salmonella* and *Campylobacter*. Keep raw juices away from ready-to-eat food and use a thermometer. Health Canada recommends 74°C (165°F) for chicken pieces, ground poultry and frozen raw breaded chicken, and 82°C (180°F) for a whole bird. [What the Maple Lodge study measured]() · [Canadian occupational guidance on CO₂]() · [Health Canada on handling poultry]() · [Canadian cooking temperatures](). **Meat quality.** In a separate US study comparing gas and electrical stunning, breast fillets from gas-stunned chickens were initially lighter in colour and slightly more acidic at deboning. After 24 hours the researchers could no longer detect those differences. The amount of liquid the fillets lost was similar. The study measured neither flavour nor health effects in people. [Riggs and colleagues, 2023]() · [Sources for gas, welfare and consumption](). ## Who certifies the certifiers and who pays them? ### Why do CHFCA and HMO certify this chicken if HMA requires a hand cut? The names are easy to confuse. The Halal Monitoring *Organization* signed the certificate for branded chicken. The Halal Monitoring *Authority* publishes a hand-cut standard and names Zabiha Halal in a comparison of supermarket poultry. Canadian law leaves each certifier to explain the religious standard behind its mark. [Zabiha Halal’s description]() · [Canadian labelling guidance]() · [Federal explanation](). **Canadian Halal Food Certifying Agency (CHFCA).** Its poultry rules expressly allow a rotary knife. A bird must be alive and conscious or able to recover immediately before the cut. Trained Muslim operators say God’s name at the start and regularly during slaughter, and a Muslim worker uses a knife if the blade misses a proper cut. CHFCA calls for the invocation at each slaughter in its general guidance. Neither document says how staff verify the timing on a Maple Lodge shift. [CHFCA’s poultry controls 2-4]() · [General slaughter requirements]() · [Signed certificate](). **Halal Monitoring Organization (HMO).** In its rules archived in 2019, the Muslim who starts the machine counts as the slaughterer and must continue reciting while the birds are cut. A worker taking over the prayer at a break must also have helped start the machine. That explains why starting the blade together mattered to Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi when he assessed Maple Lodge. HMO’s current certificate covers branded fresh and processed chicken. It gives no shift-by-shift account of who started the blade. [HMO’s archived machine-slaughter rules]() · [Rizvi’s account]() · [HMO certificate J-333](). **Halal Monitoring Authority (HMA).** Under its poultry rules, the Muslim saying God’s name over each live bird must also make that cut by hand. HMA says the speed of the mechanical lines it observed prevented it from assuring the individual prayer and proper cut for each bird. Its FAQ leaves the plants unnamed. HMA can approve certain gas-stunning systems, so the rotary cut alone puts the process Maple Lodge describes outside its standard. [HMA’s poultry guidelines]() · [HMA’s explanation](). The page did not name the issuer for each plant or a customer whose poultry the mark covered. Court records place the end of ADP’s approved supplier status in December 2024. CFIA lists ADP as a trade name at Toronto establishment 396 on Taber Road. An earlier CHFCA listing there named two chicken cuts for **Nando’s**. The certificate Hussain and CHFCA’s lead auditor signed for segmented poultry at that plant ran from October 23, 2025 to October 22, 2026. [HMO archive]() · [March 2025 document](). ## Can Anyone Start a Halal Certification Agency in Canada? **We found it mind-blowing that Canada’s domestic halal-labelling rule requires no formal Islamic training or religious affiliation to start a halal certification agency.** A business can act as the named certifier. This provision requires no independent third party, government accreditation, Islamic degree, imam, mufti or religious board. When the government adopted the rule, it explained that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) would neither set a religious standard nor “establish requirements for becoming a certifying body.” [Canada Gazette, explanation of the halal rule]() · [Food and Drug Regulations, B.01.050](). What does that mean at the meat counter? If a package says “halal” or uses a symbol that gives that impression, it must carry the full name of the person or organization that certified the food. The same requirement applies when the claim appears in advertising or at the point of sale. The business making the claim must be able to back it up if CFIA asks. For a shopper who wants hand-slaughtered chicken, the name on a Maple Lodge package tells them whose standard to look up. The rule does not require the certifier to publish its slaughter standard, fee schedule or financial statements. A buyer who wants to know who held the knife or how the birds were stunned must look beyond the certifier’s name. [CFIA’s halal label guidance]() · [Safe Food for Canadians Act, s. 6](). A federal not-for-profit corporation can charge for services and generate a surplus. It has members and cannot pay shareholders dividends. Registered charity status and tax exemption are separate questions. Exports can bring another set of requirements. For covered Canadian halal meat going to Malaysia, the Canadian export instructions specify a slaughterer authorised by an Islamic society recognised by the Malaysian authorities. [Corporations Canada’s not-for-profit guide]() · [Canadian export rules for Malaysia](). ### What if the label gives a false impression? Canada’s food law reaches misleading impressions about how food was made. The Competition Bureau considers both the literal words and the overall impression when assessing materially misleading marketing. Ontario also prohibits false consumer representations, and the advertising industry’s code has its own accuracy and clarity rules. A consumer can give CFIA the front and back of the pack, the lot code, a receipt and the exact claim. Depending on the evidence and statute, CFIA can seek correction or take enforcement action. Deciding between two interpretations of Islamic law is a different task. A shareholder can own a poultry plant without touching a bird. A supermarket can sell sealed chicken without choosing the slaughterer. For a family deciding what to buy, two questions follow. Who performed the slaughter, and what reason does the family have to trust the account of it? A Hanafi ruling from Darul Iftaa Chicago explicitly distinguishes company ownership from the validity of slaughter. It permits reliance on a seller for facts such as who supplied the meat while asking consumers to establish what that supplier’s certificate means. [Darul Iftaa Chicago’s ruling](). | Role | Religious question | Where interpretations differ | | --- | --- | --- | | Owner or investor | Who employed and supervised the people doing the work? | Non-Muslim ownership alone does not invalidate a compliant slaughter. Under rulings requiring the slaughterer’s own invocation, another person standing nearby cannot supply it on the slaughterer’s behalf. [Ruling 2611, condition 4](). | ## What does Islam traditionally require at slaughter? The Qur’an prohibits carrion and blood, identifies animals killed by strangling or a blow, and makes an exception for animals reached in time for lawful slaughter. It permits the food of the People of the Book and instructs believers about mentioning God’s name. The verses supply the basis for asking whether a stunned bird was alive at the cut. They do not describe a rotary blade. Two reports in Sahih al-Bukhari connect slaughter with the flow of blood and describe permission to eat a sheep slaughtered while dying. Sahih Muslim records the instruction to sharpen the blade and spare the animal suffering. [Qur’an 5:3]() · [5:5]() · [6:118-121]() · [Bukhari 5503]() · [2304]() · [Muslim 1955a](). *Tasmiyah* means mentioning God’s name, commonly by saying *Bismillah* (“in the name of God”). *Takbeer* means saying *Allahu akbar* (“God is greatest”). Anas reports the Prophet saying both. On ordinary slaughter, the Maliki jurist Ibn Rushd records that Malik and Abu Hanifa required the invocation when remembered and excused forgetfulness. Al-Shafi‘i considered it an emphatic prophetic practice, so omission alone did not invalidate the meat. Ibn Qudamah gives the deliberate-versus-forgotten distinction as the well-known Hanbali view and records alternatives. In Sistani’s Ja‘fari ruling, either expression suffices when said intentionally by the slaughterer, and forgetfulness is excused. [Bukhari 5565]() · [Ibn Rushd]() · [Ibn Qudamah]() · [Sistani](). The cut itself also matters. Taqi Usmani’s comparative account gives Abu Hanifa’s minimum as any three of the four throat structures. A Maliki view specifies the windpipe and both neck veins. The Shafi‘i view requires the windpipe and gullet. Usmani records both this threshold and a four-structure requirement from Ahmad. Sistani requires all four channels to be severed and the normal amount of blood to drain. This is why a certifier’s instruction for detecting a shallow cut matters even when everyone agrees the slaughterer said the words. [Usmani’s comparison]() · [Sistani on the cut]() · [blood drainage](). ## How do Sunni, Shi‘a and Ibadi scholars view hand and machine slaughter? A proper hand cut can meet the rulings discussed here. Within both Sunni and Twelver Shi‘a Islam, scholars disagree over whether a worker who starts a machine can count as the slaughterer for every bird that follows. A conveyor can carry a chicken to a person who cuts its throat by hand. A different line carries the bird to a spinning blade. Both may be called “automated,” but a scholar can accept the first and reject the second. Once the blade makes the cut, two questions divide the rulings below. Which person counts as the slaughterer? When must that person say God’s name? ### Sunni views Mufti Faisal al-Mahmudi, writing from a Hanafi perspective about Maple Lodge, distinguishes one human action that cuts several birds together from a blade that keeps cutting them one after another. He questions what act by the slaughterer begins each new cut. Toronto’s Mufti Yusuf Badat gives a different answer. He accepts a machine cut if, among other conditions, the same eligible operator invokes God at startup and for each bird. Because that is difficult on a fast line, he advises buying independently certified hand-cut chicken. [Al-Mahmudi’s signed ruling]() · [Badat’s machine-slaughter ruling](). Egypt’s Ali Gomaa reaches a different conclusion about a Polish plant. He accepts an eligible operator turning on a blade, provided the animal survives any stunning and the blade kills it. On saying God’s name, he draws on the Shafi‘i view and one Hanbali opinion that the invocation is recommended. [Gomaa’s ruling on the Polish plant](). A teaching guide from the Muslim Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh presents a Maliki interpretation allowing one invocation for an intended batch, with an eligible operator and a hand cut for birds the blade misses. Scholars at the Islamic Fiqh Academy in India illustrate how opinion can divide even in one room. Asked about the same push-button line, most delegates accepted only the first animal, some rejected even the first, and another group accepted the run. They agreed that a worker could invoke and hand-cut each living bird brought by conveyor. [Pittsburgh teaching notes, slide 22]() · [Indian academy proceedings, §§3.1-3.4](). ### Twelver Shi‘a (Ja‘fari) views Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani distinguishes birds cut at the same instant from birds cut in sequence. One intended invocation can cover simultaneous cuts. As birds pass one after another, the responsible Muslim must repeat God’s name close enough to the cuts to cover each bird. His manual also asks how the line is loaded. If birds are hung before the machine starts, the starter invokes. If a worker attaches birds to a running machine that then cuts them, he assigns the invocation to the person attaching them. [Al-Sistani’s English answer, question 2]() · [Al-Sistani’s manual, rulings 1270-71 (Persian)]() · [Who counts as the slaughterer, ruling 1274 (Persian)](). Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Saeed al-Hakeem also allows a machine to serve as a Muslim slaughterer’s tool. He rejects a continuously powered blade when the person no longer directly performs the cuts, even if someone is reciting. For Maple Lodge, the affirmative assessment in the record is Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi’s. He applied al-Sistani’s rulings and described a return visit in his statement dated February 6, 2023. [Al-Hakeem’s office, “Slaughtering Process”]() · [Rizvi’s signed accounts](). ### Zaydi and Ismaili Shi‘a sources Yemeni Zaydi scholar Muhammad bin Abd Allah Awad al-Mu’ayyadi answered a question about an American machine line that played a recorded invocation. For the setup described, he permitted the chicken if the operator was Muslim and advised abstaining otherwise. In a separate answer he required the neck vessels to be cut and God’s name to be mentioned at slaughter. Neither answer explains a timing rule for each successive bird. [Zaydi fatwa 5399 (Arabic)]() · [Zaydi fatwa 30023 (Arabic)](). A Dawoodi Bohra academy account advises readers to invoke God at slaughter and check where restaurant meat comes from. The Qur’an directs believers to refer disputes back to God and His Messenger. Scholars can take that duty seriously and still read the same evidence differently. In a report in the Sunni collection *Sahih al-Bukhari*, the Prophet describes a judge who does his best to reach the right decision. He receives two rewards if he is right and one for his effort if he is mistaken. The report gives a reason to respect honest legal reasoning even when one believes another conclusion is correct. [Qur’an 4:59]() · [Bukhari 7352](). ### How does a shopper choose whom to ask? **One Sunni approach.** Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta says someone without the training to derive a ruling may rely on a qualified jurist from a recognized school. It draws on Qur’an 16:43, which directs people unfamiliar with earlier messengers to ask those who know. Dar al-Ifta also records a view among Sunni jurists that, if you have already received conflicting answers, you should give weight to the scholar whose learning you have better reason to trust. [Qur’an 16:43]() · [Egyptian fatwa 5974 (Arabic)]() · [Dar al-Ifta’s English guide](). **For a Twelver Shi‘a Muslim following Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani,** the starting point is the qualified jurist recognized as most learned in deriving Islamic law. Where that jurist has given a ruling, his follower acts on it. If he expressly calls for *obligatory precaution*, the follower may observe it or consult the next most learned qualified jurist on that question. A *recommended precaution* is optional. Those terms have precise meanings in his manual. [Sistani’s *Islamic Laws*, rulings 1-7](). **How to treat someone who decides differently.** In an Omani television interview, the Ibadi scholar Ahmad al-Khalili distinguished asking a second scholar to understand a genuine difference from going from one to another simply to collect the easiest answers. He also said a person who relies on a scholar qualified to assess the evidence on a disputed point of practice should be spared reproach. [Al-Khalili’s interview, printed pp. 38-39 (Arabic)](). ### What does that mean for Maple Lodge? **If you follow Mufti Faisal al-Mahmudi’s ruling,** the decisive question is who performs each successive cut. He concluded that live recitation alongside the continuously turning blade described to him did not supply the human act his ruling requires for each bird. Zabiha Halal identifies its cutting method as mechanical. Someone following that ruling has a reason to pass on this chicken and look for a verified hand-cut alternative. [Al-Mahmudi’s analysis and 2025 clarification]() · [Zabiha Halal’s FAQ](). **If you follow Sistani’s rulings,** Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi offers evidence about this particular line. He accepted HMO’s account that the main and relief workers started the machine together. After a return visit and spot checks, he wrote on February 6, 2023 that he regarded the Zabiha Halal products as halal under Sistani’s rulings. A shopper who accepts that evidence under those rulings may eat the chicken. If a change of plant or procedure matters to your decision today, ask the certifier whether the same arrangement covers the product in your hand. [Rizvi’s signed statements]() · [Sistani’s answers on what a buyer may rely on](). **At a shared meal,** a guest can ask, “Is the chicken hand-cut? That’s the ruling I follow.” A host can identify the brand or offer another dish. A Sunni hadith commends leaving something genuinely doubtful to protect one’s faith. [Manufacturer’s pack image]() · [Published slaughter method](). ## Is hand-cut or machine-cut chicken halal in Muslim-majority countries? Hand-cut chicken can be halal wherever the other requirements for slaughter are met. The disagreement is over the knife on a moving line. In Brunei, the national standard requires a person to make the cut. In Türkiye, the religious council accepts a rotating blade under conditions. In Iraq, Ayatollah al-Sistani’s office accepts certain machine cuts and calls for the responsible Muslim to keep invoking God as birds pass the blade. [Compare that ruling with other Shi‘a and Sunni views](). A fatwa answers a religious question. A slaughterhouse rule governs what workers may do in a particular place. Each disclosure lets a shopper check a different part of the supply chain. | Jurisdiction | What the public record establishes | | --- | --- | | United Kingdom · England | English guidance permits slaughter without prior stunning under specified religious conditions, with a hand-held knife. To learn that the company uses a rotating blade, that shopper can turn to its slaughter FAQ. To understand why a scholar accepts that method or objects to it, the most revealing accounts describe what happens when one worker relieves another and the blade keeps turning. [Brand FAQ]() · [Rizvi’s account]() · [Al-Mahmudi’s assessment](). We found no representative survey showing how Canadian Muslims read the packaging and insufficient evidence to conclude that Maple Lodge deceived them. A family that requires a hand cut can make its choice from the company’s description. For a family whose ruling permits a rotary blade under certain conditions, a certificate and a visit report can answer different parts of the question. Whether that is enough for a particular purchase rests with the reader and the religious guidance they follow. ## Maple Lodge Farms and Zabiha Halal FAQs Canadian product and certificate information checked November 1, 2026. ### [Is Maple Lodge Farms chicken hand-slaughtered or machine-slaughtered?]() **Maple Lodge Farms says its Zabiha Halal chicken is machine-slaughtered.** A rotating blade normally makes the neck cut while Muslim workers say God’s name aloud. [Manufacturer’s slaughter FAQ]() · [What happens on the line](). ### [Does the name “Zabiha Halal” mean a person cut the chicken by hand?]() No. In a Canadian trademark filing, Maple Lodge Farms translated its brand name as “meat slaughtered according to Islamic rules.” The filing specifies no hand cut. The company’s own description identifies a rotating blade. [Canadian trademark record]() · [Producer’s explanation](). ### [Is Maple Lodge Farms Original Chicken Bologna halal?]() Check the brand on the wrapper. Maple Lodge Farms and Zabiha Halal both sell a product called Original Chicken Bologna. The Zabiha Halal product page expressly says it is halal-certified. [Zabiha Halal bologna]() · [Regular Maple Lodge bologna]() · [See the photographed wrapper](). ### [Who certifies Zabiha Halal chicken? Is it HMA-certified?]() Zabiha Halal names the Canadian Halal Food Certifying Agency (CHFCA) and the Halal Monitoring Organization (HMO). We found no evidence of a CO₂ poisoning risk from eating chicken stunned this way. Raw chicken can carry bacteria regardless of the stunning method. Health Canada recommends cooking pieces to 74°C and a whole bird to 82°C. Whether the bird survived until the halal cut is a separate question. Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi reaffirmed in February 2023 that the process he inspected met Ayatollah Sistani’s requirements. In June 2023, Mufti Faisal al-Mahmudi explained why an automatically turning blade and live recitation did not meet his requirement for a human act of slaughter for each successive bird. The two accounts concern the same brand but apply different religious tests. [Rizvi’s signed account]() · [Al-Mahmudi’s ruling]() · [Whose ruling should I follow?](). ### [Is Maple Lodge Farms Muslim-owned?]() According to Zabiha Halal, the May family owns Maple Lodge Farms and the business is not Muslim-owned. The brand says it employs Muslims who recite at slaughter. If your religious standard requires a Muslim to perform the slaughter, ask who starts the blade and who makes the cut. [Company’s ownership and staffing statement]() · [Religious rulings on owners and slaughterers](). ### [Are Zabiha Halal beef burgers covered by the chicken certificate?]() HMO certificate J-333 covers fresh and processed chicken only. Zabiha Halal identifies its beef burgers as halal-certified and says CHFCA approves and supervises the locations making its beef products. Check the mark on the beef package. The brand’s description of a rotating blade for chickens does not establish how its cattle are slaughtered. [Zabiha Halal beef burgers]() · [Company’s beef FAQ]() · [HMO certificate](). ### [Is Maple Leaf Foods’ Mina Halal chicken the same as Maple Lodge Farms’ Zabiha Halal chicken?]() No. Maple **Leaf** Foods identifies Mina as its brand and describes its poultry as hand-slaughtered and HMA-certified.
