Is Nando's halal in Canada?

What this means before you order

In Ontario, yes on Nando's Canada's own word. The chain's website carries a help page, in the Food section of its FAQ, headed “Does Nando's serve Halal Chicken?” Its answer, read twice on 1 October 2026: “All of our restaurants in Ontario sell Halal Chicken.” and “However, this is not the case in British Columbia and Alberta.” The page is undated; the Internet Archive's availability service reports a capture of it dated 6 August 2025, which we did not read.

A national chain that publishes that on its own site is answerable for it, so we report it as Nando's statement and treat it as standing: nothing found withdraws or contradicts it. It covers chicken, it names no certifier or supplier, and it says the chicken in British Columbia and Alberta is not halal. The earlier version of this page said Nando's Canada had published no position; the FAQ lives at an address our August read missed.

What Nando's has not said matters as much. “Sell Halal Chicken” is a statement about chicken at Ontario restaurants, not that the restaurants are halal certified: no certifier, supplier or slaughter method is named, no certificate is published, and the chain's own Ontario restaurant pages carry no halal tag. The menu read the same day shows no bacon, pork or chorizo item and no alcohol among its beverages; the menu is national and silent on provincial differences.

Nando's Canada publishes no ingredient or allergen list; its help pages say nutrition is on the menu page, which shows calories only, and tell guests with allergies to ask the Patrão, the manager. Nando's UK publishes a halal page (not Canada) saying its UK restaurants are not halal while a number serve halal chicken; it says nothing about Canada and forms no part of this answer.

In Ontario, ask the restaurant which supplier and certifier stand behind the chicken.

What official sources establish

The primary document is a help page on nandos.ca headed “Does Nando's serve Halal Chicken?” Its answer is two sentences: “All of our restaurants in Ontario sell Halal Chicken.” and “However, this is not the case in British Columbia and Alberta.” We read it twice on 1 October 2026, the second time with character-level confirmation of both sentences and the page title.

It sits in the Food category of the site's FAQ, which lists 34 questions in six categories, and it is undated; the Internet Archive's availability service reports a capture of the page dated 6 August 2025, which we did not read, so the statement has been on the site since at least then. The site footer reads “© Nando's 2026”.

We take a national chain at its word when it publishes a halal claim in its own name: the company is answerable for it and would have to withdraw it if it were untrue. So this page reports the help page as Nando's Canada's statement and treats it as standing. Nothing contradicts it: no certifier has disputed it, no report describes a change, and the menu lists no pork.

The earlier version of this page said Nando's Canada had published no halal position; that was our error, not a change by the chain. Our August 2026 read looked for /faq, which returns a not-found page, and for a FAQ entry in the sitemap, which has none, because the FAQ index is at /faqs and the help pages sit outside the sitemap.

What the statement does and does not cover is the chain's to say, and it has said this much: the chicken sold at every Ontario restaurant is halal; the chicken in British Columbia and Alberta is not. It names no certifier, supplier or slaughter method, says nothing about the rest of the menu or the kitchen, and is not repeated on any restaurant page.

The other Food help pages add that nutrition is on the menu page (calories only), that guests with allergies should ask the Patrão, the manager, and that the chickens “are marinated for 24 hours and then flame-grilled in front of you, while being basted in your choice of flavor.” The privacy policy, last amended 15 May 2025, names the three Canadian companies behind the chain and a Mississauga head office.

No certifier lists a Nando's restaurant on the registers we could read. On 1 October 2026 the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register, 82 entries, and ISNA Halal's restaurant directory, 34 entries over four pages, were read in a rendered browser and name none; HMA's supplier list of 23 entries names none. CHFCA's directory showed only a loading message and CHEC's site timed out, so those two could not be read. The Ontario claim names no certifier to look up, so the registers neither confirm nor contradict it.

Locations and products

Per the chain: every Ontario restaurant sells halal chicken; the British Columbia and Alberta restaurants do not. The locator page describes the chain as located “throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario”, and the sitemap lists 31 restaurant pages, by slug British Columbia 16, Ontario 11 and Alberta 4; that split is inferred from page names, since only four addresses were read. The Ontario pages by slug are Dixie and Heartland in Mississauga, Bay Street, Kennedy Commons and Etobicoke in Toronto, North Brampton, Richmond Hill, Hamilton, West Oaks and two in Ottawa.

Four restaurant pages were read on 1 October 2026: Dixie (5101 Dixie Road, Mississauga), Kennedy Commons (15 William Kitchen Road, Toronto), North Brampton (10015 Hurontario Street) and Strawberry Hill (12101 72nd Avenue, Surrey). Each carries an address, hours and service features drawn from Dine In, Patio, Curbside Pickup, Takeout, Delivery, Catering, PERi-Perks and Order at table, and none carries a halal tag or note. The province-level statement is made once, on the help page, and nowhere else.

The menu is flame-grilled chicken in quarters, halves and wholes, sandwiches and wraps, platters, sides, salads and bowls, sauces, three desserts (Cheesecake, Chocolate Cake and Nando's Kisses) and a kids menu. No bacon, pork or chorizo item appears, and the beverages are lemonades, a spritz, iced tea, juices, soft drinks and water, with no beer, wine or cocktail. The menu is national; it does not say whether the Ontario and western menus differ in any way beyond the chicken.

Certification, ingredients and preparation

A chain's statement is not a certifier's finding. Nando's says its Ontario restaurants sell halal chicken; no certifier has published a certificate for any Nando's restaurant or named the supplier, and the chain names neither. Whatever certificate an Ontario restaurant holds is its supplier's, covering the chicken, not the kitchen.

“Sell Halal Chicken” is narrower than “halal restaurant”. The statement does not say that every chicken item is covered, that sauces, sides and desserts are, or that any separate preparation is used; it describes nothing about the kitchen at all. Nando's UK draws exactly that line on its own page, saying its restaurants are not halal while some serve halal chicken; the Canadian page does not say which of those it means.

Slaughter method is unstated. Nando's Canada has not said whether the chicken is hand- or machine-slaughtered or whether stunning is used, and without a named certifier there is no published standard to read. We do not rule between schools of thought; ask which supplier the restaurant uses today and apply the standard of a certifier you trust.

The UK page is not evidence for Canada. Nando's UK says “Our restaurants aren't halal, but we have a number of restaurants in the UK that serve 100% halal chicken,” authorised by halal food authorities it does not name, at about 128 listed restaurants. It is a United Kingdom page (not Canada): it says nothing about Canada and forms no part of the answer here.

What Nando's has not said, and what to check before ordering

Not said by Nando's Canada as of 1 October 2026: which supplier provides the halal chicken to Ontario restaurants, which certifier covers it and how it is slaughtered; whether “sell Halal Chicken” covers every chicken item, including wings, livers, tenders and the chicken in bowls and wraps; whether any pork or alcohol is served in Ontario restaurants (the national menu shows none); whether Ontario restaurants use any separate preparation; when the Ontario arrangement started and whether it is written anywhere beyond the help page; and why the chicken in British Columbia and Alberta is not halal.

Before ordering in Ontario, ask the restaurant which supplier and certifier stand behind its chicken and to show you the current certificate; check its date and the product named on it. In British Columbia and Alberta, the chain itself says the chicken is not halal.
