Renso Pho-Potle, billed by its operators as Canada's first build-your-own pho concept, opens at 506 Queen St. W. with a media preview Sept. 23, a soft opening Saturday, Sept. 26 and a grand opening Saturday, Oct. 3. Signage is already up on the storefront, which the restaurant announced on Instagram in late August. Diners pick broth, protein, rice and toppings.
The dates have moved. August coverage reported a Sept. 19 soft opening; Renso's website countdown and a Sept. 2 Instagram post both now confirm Sept. 26.
That same post introduced the dry pho, phở trộn: rice noodles tossed in a savoury-sweet signature sauce with herbs, crushed peanuts and toppings, photographed with shrimp and a fried egg.
Ahead of opening, the team ran a pop-up called Renso Ko Bites. On its own social accounts it announced an appearance at the Mississauga Halal Food Festival on June 12 and 13, advertising "100% Halal certified meat" and calling itself a fully halal pop-up. No certifier was named. It also worked the Taste of Vietnam festival at Nathan Phillips Square in July.
Renso's own press release described the pop-up as one of the few serving halal and non-halal items, which is a different claim.
The parent company says its suppliers meet standards including HACCP, ISO, GMP and halal, but that's ingredient-level certification, not a halal kitchen.
And the halal marketing ran on the pop-up's account. The restaurant's own account has been posting opening dates and menu items without mentioning halal once, and the website doesn't mention it either.
A halal-forward pop-up is opening a restaurant, and the restaurant hasn't said what its halal policy will be.
Halal Food Pass will carry Renso Pho-Potle as unconfirmed until the restaurant clarifies. We'll update this piece when it does.
