Butt Karahi

Pakistani · Karahi house — 3015 Winston Churchill Blvd, north of Dundas · Fully halal (confirmed by the restaurant)

10% off your bill · Mon–Thu, 12–6 p.m.

Karahi here is family-style: a bone-in chicken karahi is $46.99 and realistically feeds two to three with naan, which is how students should order it — as a group. Split three ways you're at roughly $16–20 a head before drinks, and the 10% comes off the whole bill. The noon-to-six window means a late lunch or early dinner works; one Lime Card covers the table (up to six people), so only one of you needs the membership.

  • Best for: group dinners; one card covers up to 6 people
  • Typical spend: $16–25 per person when 2–3 share a karahi
  • Affordable pick: Daal Channa Karahi $14.99 (menu prices from buttkarahicanada.com)

20% off your bill · Mon–Wed, 3–6 p.m. & 8–9 p.m.

The biggest discount near UTM, with one important caveat: the restaurant discloses that only its chicken is halal, so order from the chicken side of the menu. A chicken dinner with two sides is $15, which lands at $12 inside the offer windows, and the jerk chicken wrap is $14.50. Two windows on Monday to Wednesday (3–6 p.m. and 8–9 p.m.) fit an early dinner after afternoon lectures. Closed Sundays.

  • Best for: biggest percentage saving; early dinner Mon–Wed
  • Typical spend: $12–16 per person
  • Affordable pick: chicken dinner with two sides $15 → $12 in the window (menu prices from reggaefusion.ca)
  • Lime Card offer: 20% off · dine-in & takeout · Mon–Wed, 3–6 p.m. & 8–9 p.m. · can't be combined with other promotions
  • Halal note: only chicken is halal — the restaurant's page spells this out; stick to eligible items
  • Distance from UTM: about 4 km
  • Driving time: 7–10 min · free plaza parking
  • MiWay time: about 20–30 min (1C to Winston Churchill + walk)
  • Last checked: July 26, 2026

AL Chick

Fried chicken & burgers — 1069 Dundas St W, near Confederation Pkwy · Fully halal (confirmed by the restaurant)

The most student-shaped deal terms in this guide: 15% off across a twelve-hour window, four days a week — lunch, dinner and the 10 p.m. study-break run all qualify. It's hand-breaded fried chicken, smash burgers and wraps: the AL Chicken Sandwich is $8.99 (about $7.64 with the offer) and the Loaded Chicken Box — four pieces, loaded fries and a drink — starts at $14.99, about $12.74 after the discount. Getting there from UTM: U-Pass, MiWay, driving and ride-shares

MiWay and the U-Pass. Eligible UTM students can generally use MiWay through their U-Pass without paying an additional fare for each journey — MiWay describes it as unlimited travel during the school year, with the fee included in tuition. Check the current U-Pass eligibility rules before travelling, especially over the summer terms. Without a U-Pass, a single MiWay fare is $3.50 with PRESTO ($2.90 for ages 13–19; $4.50 cash) per the official fare page, checked July 26, 2026. Routes at the campus terminal: 110, 101/101A, 1C, 44 and 126 (UTM transit page); the 35 Eglinton reaches the Eglinton plazas via a transfer from the 44.

Driving. Every restaurant here has a free plaza lot and none is more than about 16 minutes away outside rush hour — one friend with a car beats everything else for Ridgeway Plaza and evening trips.

Ride-shares. Estimated ride-share cost from campus: approximately $10–16 one way for the closer spots, up to about $20 for AL Chick — estimates checked July 26, 2026; prices move with demand and traffic, so check the app for the live fare before booking. A solo ride-share usually costs more than the discount saves; split between three or four people it starts making sense.

Bikes and walking. By bike: Damaski Palace 10–12 minutes, the Winston Churchill pair about 15, Ridgeway Plaza 15–20. On foot only Damaski Palace is even borderline (35–40 minutes each way) — treat the rest as a bus, bike or car trip.

The math, honestly. A $20 meal at 15% off costs about $17 before tax and tip — roughly $3 saved. If your U-Pass covers the bus, that saving is real; if you'd be paying $7 in return fares just for the trip, it isn't. The offers work best on trips you were already making, on a bike, or as a group splitting one ride.

Best options by situation

  • Quick lunch between classes: Damaski Palace — order takeout ahead, 15% off weekdays 1–6 p.m., closest to campus.
  • Cheapest meal, full stop: za'atar manakish at Damaski Palace — about $5.94 with the offer.
  • Best without a car: AL Chick — one direct bus (1C/101) from the UTM terminal, and the longest offer window to work with. Damaski Palace is the short-hop alternative.
  • Best for groups: Butt Karahi on Winston Churchill — family-style karahi priced for sharing, and one Lime Card covers up to six people.
  • Biggest percentage saving: Reggae Fusion at 20%, Mon–Wed — chicken menu only, per its halal disclosure.
  • Best weekday-lunch coverage: ChefG — 5% is modest, but it runs 11 a.m.–6 p.m. all five weekdays, and the daily special does the heavy lifting.
  • Best late-night area: Ridgeway Plaza around Butt Karahi Ridgeway — kitchens run past midnight; just know the discounts in this guide end by 6 p.m.
  • Shortest total trip: Damaski Palace, again — about 3 km door to door.

Students and the Lime Card: what's actually student-specific

To be precise about what saves you money here: the restaurant offers above are Lime Card member offers, not separate student discounts — every member gets the same deal. The student-specific part is the membership itself: UTM and Sheridan (HMC) students get their first month free by signing up with their school email — no credit card — and can earn up to 12 extra free months by inviting classmates. After the free months, continuing costs $2.99/month or $25/year for students (regular price: $2.99/month or $25/year), and it only continues if you choose to set it up yourself. So a UTM student can realistically run this entire guide — bus included, via the U-Pass — having paid nothing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest halal restaurant to UTM that takes the Lime Card?

Damaski Palace, at Erin Mills Parkway and Folkway Drive, is about 3 km from the UTM Student Centre — a 5–8 minute drive or a 10–12 minute bike ride. Its Lime Card offer is 15% off takeout, Monday to Friday, 1–6 p.m.

Can UTM students use the U-Pass to reach these restaurants?

Generally yes. Eligible UTM students can use MiWay through their U-Pass without paying an additional fare for each journey, and every restaurant in this guide is on or near a MiWay corridor. Check the current U-Pass eligibility rules — including summer coverage — before travelling.

Are there cheap halal meals near UTM?

Yes. The cheapest confirmed items in this guide are at Damaski Palace — a za'atar manakish is $6.99, about $5.94 after the 15% takeout discount — and AL Chick, where the AL Chicken Sandwich is $8.99, about $7.64 with the 15% offer applied.

Which halal restaurants near UTM offer student discounts?

The savings in this guide come from Lime Card member offers, not separate student discounts — the discount is the same for every member. What is student-specific is the membership itself: students at UTM and Sheridan (HMC) get their first month free by signing up with their school email, no credit card needed — details on the student page.

Is there halal food within walking distance of UTM?

Damaski Palace is the only restaurant in this guide that is even borderline walkable — roughly 35–40 minutes each way from the Student Centre. Realistically, a short MiWay ride, a bike, or a car share is the practical way to reach everything here.

How much does a ride-share from UTM to these restaurants cost?

As of July 26, 2026, expect roughly $10–16 one way for the closer spots (Erin Mills, Winston Churchill, Ridgeway) and up to about $20 for AL Chick on Dundas — estimates only, since prices move with demand and traffic. Check the app for the live fare before booking, and split the ride if you're going as a group.

Are the prices and travel times in this guide guaranteed?

No. Every figure here is approximate, checked on July 26, 2026 against live listings, official menus and official transit pages. Restaurants change prices and hours, and traffic changes travel times — each restaurant's live Halal Food Pass page is always the current source of truth.
