Osmow's says all of its locations are halal. Its verified X account said so on 20 January 2023, and it told CBC Marketplace in October 2024 that all its meat is hand-slaughtered. We report that as the chain's word. No certificate covers any Osmow's restaurant, its website says nothing, and its own slaughter statements conflict.

What this means before you order
Yes, on Osmow's own word. Asked on X whether its restaurants are halal, the chain's verified account replied on 20 January 2023: “Yes, all of our locations are halal!” In October 2024 it told CBC Marketplace by email that all of its meat is hand-slaughtered and that it buys the highest-quality halal products. A chain of more than 200 restaurants that says this publicly is answerable for it, so we report it as Osmow's statement and treat it as standing: nothing since withdraws it, and no report we found describes non-halal meat at an Osmow's.
What the statement does not give you: a certificate. No Canadian certifier lists an Osmow's restaurant, osmows.com says nothing about halal on any page we read, and the only certificates anyone has seen are supplier certificates for the chicken, one of them a Maple Leaf (Mina Halal) certificate from the Halal Monitoring Authority shown to CBC's undercover team. The chain has also described its own slaughter method two ways: machine-slaughtered, on X in August 2022; hand-slaughtered, to CBC in 2024.
Marketplace also found expired certificates at an Osmow's and staff who presented a supplier certificate as if it covered the whole restaurant. If the method matters to you, ask the restaurant which supplier it uses today.
Suppliers and preparation can change. Confirm the current halal information with the specific restaurant before ordering.
What official sources establish
Osmow's has made its halal statement twice in places we could read first-hand. The first is a reply from its verified X account, @Osmows, on 20 January 2023: “Yes, all of our locations are halal!” The customer's question has since been deleted; the chain's answer is still live, and we show it below as we read it on 15 September 2026. The second is the email it sent CBC Marketplace for the programme's 18 October 2024 report, which CBC summarises as: all of its meat is hand-slaughtered, it has purchased the highest-quality halal products, and it would contact its certifiers to learn more about the process.
We take a national chain at its word when it makes a halal claim publicly in its own name: the company is answerable for it and would have to withdraw it if it were untrue. So this page reports the claim as Osmow's statement and treats it as standing. Nothing we found withdraws it, and no report describes non-halal meat at an Osmow's. What the chain has not said, or has said inconsistently, is set out below.
The chain's own website says nothing. On 15 September 2026 we read the home, about, menu, allergen, catering, nutrition-calculator and contact pages of osmows.com; none mentions halal. The site has no FAQ page, and a search of the WordPress content site behind it for “halal” returned no results. The about page describes a family-run company founded in Streetsville, Ontario, in 2001 with more than 215 locations across Canada and the United States.
No certifier lists an Osmow's restaurant. On 15 September 2026 the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register, CHEC's certified-restaurant list and the entries ISNA Halal's directory displayed named none. The certificates that exist are supplier certificates for the chicken. The one Marketplace was shown was Maple Leaf's; Maple Leaf's Mina Halal brand says on its own site that it is certified by the Halal Monitoring Authority and is “strictly Zabeeha by hand.”
Locations and products
The statement covers every location: “all of our locations.” Osmow's does not publish a list of suppliers, a certificate, or any page explaining what halal means at its counters, so the statement is the whole of what the chain has said about scope.
Osmow's serves chicken, beef and lamb shawarma, falafel and its plated “on the rocks” and “on the sticks” meals. The 2023 statement is about locations, not products; the 2024 email is about “all of its meat.” Neither addresses sauces, fryers or storage, and no certificate covers a kitchen.
What one location showed CBC is not what every location buys. The Maple Leaf certificate is evidence about one supplier at one restaurant on one day in 2024; franchisees may source differently. If the supplier matters to you, ask the location.
Certification, ingredients and preparation
A chain's statement is not a certificate. Osmow's says its locations are halal; no body has published a certificate covering an Osmow's kitchen, its handling or its other ingredients. Marketplace's finding that none of the ten restaurants it visited is a certified restaurant is consistent with that, and it is why the label on this page rests on the chain's word alone.
A supplier's certificate is not the restaurant's. Staff at one Osmow's showed CBC a Maple Leaf certificate as if it certified the restaurant; HMA's Imam Omar Subedar told CBC that presenting a supplier document that way is “very unfortunate” and “prevalent in the industry,” and that a restaurant is certified only when every ingredient is checked and no pork or alcohol is on the premises.
Hand and machine are different claims, and Osmow's has made both. Its 2022 X reply said machine-slaughtered; its 2024 email to CBC said hand-slaughtered; the supplier whose certificate CBC saw says hand. We do not rule between schools of thought on stunning or machine slaughter. If the method matters to you, ask which supplier the location uses today and apply the standard of a certifier you trust.
An expired certificate is a paperwork failure, not proof that the meat was not halal. Marketplace was shown eight expired certificates across three chains, one of them Osmow's. It says nothing about the meat on the day; it does say the paper you are shown at a counter may be out of date.
What Osmow's has not said, and what to check before ordering
Not said by Osmow's as of 15 September 2026: who its suppliers are and which bodies certify them; whether the 2022 “machine-slaughtered” reply or the 2024 “hand-slaughtered” email describes its chicken today; whether the same rule applies to its United States locations; and any of this on osmows.com rather than in a social-media reply and an email to a broadcaster.
Before ordering, ask the location which supplier its chicken, beef and lamb come from and to show you the current certificate; check the date on it. If the answer names Mina Halal or another certified brand, decide for yourself whether that certifier's method meets your standard.

Are Osmow's locations in the United States halal too?
The 2023 reply said “all of our locations,” and the chain now has locations in the United States. It has not said whether the same sourcing applies there. This page is about Canada; ask a US location directly.
When was this page last checked?
On 15 September 2026 we read both X replies, the CBC Marketplace report in its Radio-Canada International copy, Mina Halal's about page, osmows.com in full, and the HMA, CHEC and ISNA Halal registers. Next review is due on 15 October 2026, or sooner if Osmow's publishes anything.

On 15 September 2026 we read Osmow's two replies on X first-hand (20 January 2023 and 2 August 2022) and reproduced the first on this page. We read CBC Marketplace's 18 October 2024 report in the Radio-Canada International copy, cbc.ca having refused every read, for the chain's email response, the undercover findings and the Maple Leaf and HMA statements it quotes.
We read Mina Halal's about page for the supplier's own certifier and slaughter statements. We read osmows.com's home, about, menu, allergen, catering, nutrition-calculator and contact pages and searched its content site for halal. We read the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register, CHEC's certified-restaurant list and the entries ISNA Halal's directory displayed; Osmow's appears on none. We searched for any Osmow's statement from 2025 or 2026 and found none.
What we could not check: Osmow's has not published a halal page, a supplier list or a certificate; the statements are a 2023 social-media reply and a 2024 email to CBC as CBC summarised it. Its two descriptions of slaughter method conflict. The Maple Leaf certificate is one location's paperwork from 2024. We have not called any restaurant and have seen no certificate ourselves.

How to read our halal labels
We report what a chain, a named certifier or a specific restaurant says, with the scope of that statement. Halal Food Pass does not certify halal.
A statement about chicken does not automatically cover the whole menu. A supplier certificate does not establish restaurant certification. A lack of published certification does not tell us how animals were slaughtered.
When a chain states publicly that its food is halal, we report that statement as the chain's own word, with its date, its scope and the certifier it names, and we treat it as standing until the chain withdraws it or evidence contradicts it. A claim that rests on unnamed phone calls or an anonymous post is reported as a claim, not as a finding.
