Is Pita Pit halal in Canada?
Halal items named, no certification published
Pita Pit says its chicken and beef shawarma are halal certified, in a press release of 4 May 2026, not on pitapit.ca, which carried no halal wording anywhere on 1 October 2026. The release names no certifier. The claim covers two proteins; bacon, ham and pepperoni share the menu. No certifier lists a Pita Pit.
What the evidence supports
| Question | Supported finding | Scope | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| What has Pita Pit said? | “The chicken and beef shawarma are halal certified. The proteins are specially prepared using traditional marination and cooking methods, then finished on the grill in-store.” The release of 4 May 2026, issued through Business Wire with a Montreal dateline, names Chicken Shawarma, Beef Shawarma and Halloumi Shawarma as the lineup, says it “will be available for a limited time,” and says the chain operates more than 200 restaurants across Canada. It names no certifier, certificate or supplier. | Canada, two proteins, 4 May 2026 | Pita Pit, release via Business Wire, retrieved 2026-10-01 |
| Does pitapit.ca say the same? | No. On 1 October 2026 the home page, menu index, Created 4 You page, nutrition page, Our Story, FAQ and French menu page carried no halal, shawarma, kosher, pork or certified wording; the 47-URL sitemap has no shawarma or halal page; a site search returned “Nothing found.” for halal and again for shawarma. The FAQ, about twenty questions on rewards, the app, franchising, suppliers, allergens, catering, delivery, gluten-free and vegan options, has no halal question. | Canada, website | Pita Pit, site search, retrieved 2026-10-01 |
| Is the shawarma still on the menu? | The Nutritionals & Allergen Guide dated 20 August 2026 lists Chicken Shawarma, C4U Crispy chicken shawarma, C4U Crispy Beef Shawarma and C4U Crispy Halloumi Shawarma, so the lineup was still listed then. The guide attaches no halal wording to any row; it carries nutrient and allergen columns only. The undated printable takeout menu lists Chicken Shawarma as a standing protein. Whether the limited time has ended is not said. | Canada, national document, 20 August 2026 | Pita Pit, Nutritionals & Allergen Guide, retrieved 2026-10-01 |
| Who certifies the shawarma? | Not said. The 2026 release names no certifier, and Retail Insider's report of 6 May 2026 restates “halal certified” without adding one. A release of 22 November 2016, for an earlier chicken shawarma, said Pita Pit “worked extensively with Mina Halal” and would cook it “separately in the microwave”; the word certified does not appear in it, and a 2016 supplier name is not a 2026 certificate. HMA's supplier list of September 2017 names a Mina Foods; that is not a Pita Pit certificate. | Canada, supplier level at most | Pita Pit, release via Canada Newswire, 22 November 2016, retrieved 2026-10-01 |
| Which other meats are on the menu? | Per the guide, the printable menu and the Build Your Own sheet: Bacon, Deli ham, Ham Black Forest Sliced, Pepperoni, BBQ Rib Patty, Gyro, Crispy Donair, Beef Brisket, Philly Steak, Steak, Deli Turkey, Chicken Souvlaki and Buffalo Chicken. The species of the ham, bacon, pepperoni, rib patty, donair and gyro is not stated, and the word pork appears in none of the documents read. Cheeses are Cheddar, Swiss, Feta, Parmesan and Halloumi, with no enzyme or rennet wording. | Canada, national menu documents | Pita Pit, Build Your Own sheet, retrieved 2026-10-01 |
| How many restaurants, and are any tagged? | The chain says “more than 200 restaurants across Canada” in the release and “over 200” on its locator. The locator is a static list by province with address, phone and a link only; it has no halal filter or attribute. Our two reads of it tallied differently (229 by province; 207 entries including closed locations), so this page adopts no count. | Canada, locator | Pita Pit, find a restaurant, retrieved 2026-10-01 |
| Is any Pita Pit restaurant certified? | No. The Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register, 82 entries read in a rendered browser on 1 October 2026, and the 34 entries in ISNA Halal's restaurants category name no Pita Pit; HMA's supplier list of September 2017 does not either. CHFCA's directory showed only a loading message and could not be read; CHEC was not checked this run. | Canada | HMA and ISNA Halal registers, retrieved 2026-10-01 |
What this means before you order
Two items, on Pita Pit's own word in a press release. The chain's release of 4 May 2026, issued through Business Wire, says: “The chicken and beef shawarma are halal certified. The proteins are specially prepared using traditional marination and cooking methods, then finished on the grill in-store.” It names no certifier, certificate or supplier, and it says the lineup, Chicken Shawarma, Beef Shawarma and Halloumi Shawarma, “will be available for a limited time.”
That statement does not appear on pitapit.ca. On 1 October 2026 we read the site's FAQ, menu pages, printable menu, Build Your Own sheet and the Nutritionals & Allergen Guide of 20 August 2026, and searched the site for halal and for shawarma: the word halal appears nowhere, although the guide still lists the shawarma rows. We report the claim as Pita Pit's, with its date and its limits; no certifier lists a Pita Pit.
What the chain's own documents say matters for a halal diet. The halal claim covers the chicken and beef shawarma; it does not cover Halloumi Shawarma or the rest of the menu. The Nutritionals & Allergen Guide of 20 August 2026 lists Bacon, Deli ham, Ham Black Forest Sliced, Pepperoni and a BBQ Rib Patty beside the shawarma rows; the word pork appears nowhere in it, so the species of those items is not stated.
The release says the shawarma proteins are “finished on the grill in-store” and does not say whether that grill is shared; the guide says the chain “cannot guarantee a 100% allergen-free environment.” A 2016 release for an earlier chicken shawarma named Mina Halal and described separate microwave cooking and storage; that was a different product and cannot be assumed to describe today's preparation.
Ask the restaurant whether the shawarma is still sold, who certifies it and what the grill is shared with.
Suppliers and preparation can change. Confirm the current halal information with the specific restaurant before ordering.
What official sources establish
The primary document is Pita Pit's own press release of 4 May 2026, headed Pita Pit Launches Shawarma Lineup Across Canada and issued through Business Wire with a Montreal dateline. We re-read it on 1 October 2026. It says: “The chicken and beef shawarma are halal certified. The proteins are specially prepared using traditional marination and cooking methods, then finished on the grill in-store.”
It names the lineup as Chicken Shawarma, Beef Shawarma and Halloumi Shawarma, “available as a pita, salad or bowl,” and says the lineup “will be available for a limited time.” It names no certifier, no certificate and no supplier. A chain is answerable for what it publishes in its own name, so this page reports the sentence as Pita Pit's statement, with its date and exactly its scope: two proteins.
The statement lives in the release, not on the chain's website. On 1 October 2026 we read pitapit.ca's home page, menu index, Created 4 You page, nutrition page, Our Story, FAQ, French menu page and 47-URL sitemap, its undated printable takeout menu, its Build Your Own sheet and its Nutritionals & Allergen Guide dated 20 August 2026, and we searched the site for halal and for shawarma.
The word halal appears in none of them; both searches returned “Nothing found.” The FAQ answers questions about rewards, the app, franchising, suppliers, allergens, catering, delivery, gluten-free and vegan options, and school lunches, and none about halal. The guide does still list Chicken Shawarma, C4U Crispy chicken shawarma, C4U Crispy Beef Shawarma and C4U Crispy Halloumi Shawarma as menu rows, with nutrient and allergen columns and no halal wording.
An earlier release, of 22 November 2016 through Canada Newswire, concerned a different product: a chicken shawarma pita developed, it said, “extensively with Mina Halal,” to be cooked “separately in the microwave” and stored “away from other proteins,” with employees changing gloves before each halal order. The word certified does not appear in it. The 2026 release describes a grill finish instead, so the 2016 process is historical and this page does not carry it forward. Retail Insider reported the 2026 launch on 6 May 2026 and restated “halal certified” without naming a certifier.
No certifier lists a Pita Pit. On 1 October 2026 the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register, 82 entries read in a rendered browser, and the 34 entries in ISNA Halal's restaurants category named none. HMA's supplier list, last updated September 2017, does not name Pita Pit; it names a Mina Foods, which is a supplier entry from 2017, not a certificate for Pita Pit's 2026 shawarma. CHFCA's directory could not be read.
Locations and products
The claim is national and product-level: the release announces the lineup “across Canada” and says the chain operates more than 200 restaurants there. Pita Pit publishes no list of restaurants serving the shawarma and no per-location halal tag; its locator is a static list by province with address, phone and a link, and no halal filter. Our two reads of that list tallied differently, 229 entries by province and 207 on a second read that included closed locations, so this page adopts no count of its own.
The products named are Chicken Shawarma and Beef Shawarma, served as crispy pitas, salads or bowls. Halloumi Shawarma is the third item in the lineup and carries no halal wording in the release. The rest of the menu, per the August 2026 guide, the printable menu and the Build Your Own sheet, includes Bacon, Deli ham, Ham Black Forest Sliced, Pepperoni, a BBQ Rib Patty, Gyro, Crispy Donair, Beef Brisket, Philly Steak, Deli Turkey, Chicken Souvlaki and Buffalo Chicken, none described as halal and none with a species stated. The Created 4 You page pairs chicken with bacon in two of its four signature items.
The release calls the lineup limited-time. The guide of 20 August 2026 still listed the shawarma rows, which is the latest sign we have that it was on the menu; whether it is sold at your restaurant today is a question for that restaurant. If a Pita Pit near you advertises more than the two shawarma proteins as halal, that is the franchisee's claim, not the chain's.
Certification, ingredients and preparation
“Halal certified” without a certifier is a claim about the proteins, not a certificate we can show you. Pita Pit has not said who certifies the chicken and beef shawarma, whether the certificate belongs to a supplier or covers any restaurant, or who supplies the meat. Nothing published covers a Pita Pit kitchen, and the chain appears on no register we could read.
A statement in a press release is the chain's word, and this page treats it as standing; but the chain's own site, FAQ and August 2026 guide do not repeat it, and the guide that lists the shawarma rows attaches no halal wording to them. That gap is why the label is halal items named, no certification published, rather than anything stronger.
Preparation is not addressed. The 2026 release says the proteins are “finished on the grill in-store” and does not say whether that grill is shared with bacon, ham, pepperoni, the rib patty or other meats. The separate microwave and segregated storage described in 2016 were for a different product and cannot be assumed to apply now. The guide's only preparation line is an allergen one: “we unfortunately cannot guarantee a 100% allergen-free environment.”
Pita Pit shares a parent, Foodtastic Inc., with Freshii, whose page on this site records no halal statement at all. A shared parent is not a shared position, and neither page borrows from the other.
What Pita Pit has not said, and what to check before ordering
Not said by Pita Pit as of 1 October 2026: which organisation certifies the chicken and beef shawarma, and whether that is a supplier certificate or a restaurant-level one; who supplies the two proteins, and whether Mina Halal still supplies the chicken; whether the shawarma lineup is still sold nationally now that its limited time has run since May; whether the in-store grill is shared with pork-type items; what species the bacon, ham, pepperoni, rib patty, donair and gyro are; and why its website, FAQ and August 2026 guide carry no halal wording when its release does.
Before ordering, ask the restaurant whether the chicken and beef shawarma are still on the menu, who certifies them and whether the certificate can be shown, with its date and the supplier named on it; ask what else is cooked on the grill that finishes them; and remember that the claim never covered the halloumi, the gyro, the donair or any other item.
Pita Pit halal FAQs
Is Pita Pit halal in Canada?
Two items are, on the chain's own word. Pita Pit's press release of 4 May 2026 says "The chicken and beef shawarma are halal certified," names no certifier, and calls the lineup limited-time. That statement is not on pitapit.ca: on 1 October 2026 the site, its FAQ and its August 2026 allergen guide carried no halal wording, though the guide still listed the shawarma rows. The claim covers those two proteins only, and no certifier register we could read lists a Pita Pit.
Which Pita Pit items does the halal claim cover?
Chicken Shawarma and Beef Shawarma, per the 4 May 2026 release, served as crispy pitas, salads or bowls. Halloumi Shawarma is in the same lineup but the release attaches no halal wording to it. Nothing covers the rest of the menu, which per the chain's August 2026 guide and Build Your Own sheet includes bacon, deli ham, Black Forest ham, pepperoni, a BBQ rib patty, gyro and donair, none described as halal and none with a species stated.
Who certifies Pita Pit's shawarma?
Pita Pit has not said. The 4 May 2026 release names no certifier, certificate or supplier, and Retail Insider's 6 May 2026 report adds none. The chain's 2016 release for an earlier chicken shawarma said it worked with Mina Halal, a supplier, and did not use the word certified; a 2016 supplier name is not a 2026 certificate. The Halal Monitoring Authority and ISNA Halal registers, read on 1 October 2026, list no Pita Pit.
Is the shawarma still available, and was it limited-time?
The release of 4 May 2026 says the shawarma lineup "will be available for a limited time." Pita Pit's Nutritionals and Allergen Guide dated 20 August 2026 still lists Chicken Shawarma, Crispy Chicken Shawarma, Crispy Beef Shawarma and Crispy Halloumi Shawarma, so the lineup was on the menu then; the chain has not said whether it has ended since. Ask the restaurant whether the chicken and beef shawarma are on its menu today.
Does Pita Pit serve bacon, ham or pepperoni, and is the grill shared?
Yes to the first part, per the chain's own August 2026 guide, which lists Bacon, Deli ham, Ham Black Forest Sliced, Pepperoni and a BBQ Rib Patty without stating a species; the word pork appears nowhere in it. On the grill, the 2026 release says the shawarma proteins are "finished on the grill in-store" and does not say whether that grill is shared. Ask the restaurant what else is cooked on it.
What did Pita Pit's 2016 Mina Halal launch say, and does it still apply?
The release of 22 November 2016 said Pita Pit Canada would "cook its Chicken Shawarma separately in the microwave, and store it away from other proteins," had worked with Mina Halal on the recipe, and would have staff change gloves before each halal order. It did not use the word certified. That was a different product; the 2026 release describes a grill finish, so the 2016 process cannot be assumed to apply to today's shawarma.
When was this page last checked?
On 1 October 2026 we re-read Pita Pit's releases of 4 May 2026 and 22 November 2016, read pitapit.ca in full for the first time, including its FAQ, menu pages, sitemap, site search, printable menu, Build Your Own sheet, locator and the Nutritionals and Allergen Guide of 20 August 2026, read Retail Insider's report, and checked the HMA and ISNA Halal registers. Next review is due on 31 October 2026, or sooner if Pita Pit publishes anything.

On 1 October 2026 we re-read Pita Pit's release of 4 May 2026 on Business Wire, twice, and its release of 22 November 2016 on Canada Newswire, and read Retail Insider's report of 6 May 2026. We read pitapit.ca: the home page, menu index, Created 4 You page, nutrition page, Our Story, FAQ (about twenty questions), privacy notice, French menu page, the sitemap index and the 47-URL page sitemap, and the site's own search results for halal and for shawarma.
We read the Nutritionals and Allergen Guide of 20 August 2026 (seven pages, twice), the undated printable takeout menu and the Build Your Own sheet, and the locator twice. We read the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register (82 entries) and ISNA Halal's restaurants category (34 entries) in a rendered browser, and HMA's supplier list of September 2017; Pita Pit appears on none.
CHFCA's directory could not be read. CBC Marketplace's 2024 investigation did not mention Pita Pit. The French guide and a June 2025 French allergen chart, the side, smoothie, dessert and catering pages, and the chain's social accounts were not opened.
What we could not check: The halal claim is a press release sentence of 4 May 2026 with no certifier, and pitapit.ca does not repeat it. The guide of 20 August 2026 is the latest sign that the shawarma was still listed; the chain has not said whether its limited time has ended. The locator tallies did not reconcile, so no count is given. We have not called any restaurant and have seen no certificate.

How to read our halal labels
We report what a chain, a named certifier or a specific restaurant says, with the scope of that statement. Halal Food Pass does not certify halal.
A statement about chicken does not automatically cover the whole menu. A supplier certificate does not establish restaurant certification. A lack of published certification does not tell us how animals were slaughtered.
When a chain states publicly that its food is halal, we report that statement as the chain's own word, with its date, its scope and the certifier it names, and we treat it as standing until the chain withdraws it or evidence contradicts it. A claim that rests on unnamed phone calls or an anonymous post is reported as a claim, not as a finding.
Read our halal information policy or learn how to check a restaurant’s halal information.
