No plans, per Subway in 2014. When British newspapers reported in April 2014 that 185 Subway stores in the UK and Ireland served a halal menu, the Cornwall Free News asked Subway headquarters whether Canada would follow; Kevin Kane of Subway HQ replied by email that the programme “has been going on since 2007 in the UK and Ireland,” where some stores “cater to a Halal Menu,” and, in the paper's words, “further stated that there are no plans to do so in the US or Canada.”

Twelve years on, nothing from the chain qualifies that: Subway Canada's website, read on 1 October 2026 in English and French, contains no halal statement, its guest support portal's nine questions include none about halal, and its About Us page names “our Canadian farm-raised Chicken, Turkey, and Pork.” No Canadian Subway carries a halal tag on Uber Eats or DoorDash, while British Subway listings on the same platforms do, and no certifier register lists a Subway.

What the chain's pages do say matters for a halal diet. Pork is a listed protein: the About Us page names chicken, turkey and pork as Canadian farm-raised, the home page promoted a “Caesar Bacon” footlong and a SubDog menu section, and the ingredient statement for the Hot Dog on the new-allergens page begins with beef. The species of the bacon, ham and pepperoni is stated in the June 2026 ingredient guide on media.subway.com, which this page links but does not quote.

Store pages list pickup, delivery, catering, dining and curbside options; none carries a halal attribute. In Britain the same chain runs halal stores and says so; in Canada it said in 2014 that it would not, and no store has since been tagged halal by a platform or listed by a certifier. If a Subway near you advertises halal, that is the franchisee's claim; ask for the certificate and the supplier.

Suppliers and preparation can change. Confirm the current halal information with the specific restaurant before ordering.

What official sources establish

Subway's one recorded position on halal in Canada is twelve years old. In April 2014, when the Daily Mail and others reported that 185 Subway stores in the UK and Ireland had replaced pork with turkey-based items under a halal menu, the Cornwall Free News, a small Ontario outlet, asked Subway headquarters whether Canada would follow. Kevin Kane of Subway HQ replied by email that the programme had run since 2007 in the UK and Ireland, where some stores in areas with large Muslim populations “cater to a Halal Menu,” and the paper reported that he “further stated that there are no plans to do so in the US or Canada.”

That is a chain statement relayed by a journalist, and it is the only one anyone has recorded for Canada. Nothing from Subway Canada since 2014 qualifies or repeats it.

The chain's guest support portal, which the earlier version of this page could not open, was read in a rendered browser on 1 October 2026. Set to Canada and English, it has seven topics. Our Menu holds four questions: where to find allergen and ingredient information, whether Subway has vegan options, which menu items are pork-free, and whether it has gluten-free options.

About Subway holds five, on ownership, the number of locations, where to buy products, price differences between locations and advertised promotions. The other five topics are not about food. There is no halal question. The pork-free answer does not list items; it says: “To find allergen and ingredient information, please visit our nutrition page. There, you'll find details on standard menu items, allergens and ingredients.”

The only sourcing wording on the readable site is on About Us: “We're always evolving to bring you quality, Canadian-sourced ingredients, like our Canadian farm-raised Chicken, Turkey, and Pork. Our Eggs are 100% EQA Certified Canadian Eggs,” and goes on to say its cheddar, Habanero Jack and Monterey Jack cheeses are made with Canadian dairy. The French page carries the same line.

That is a statement about where the meat is raised and how the eggs are graded; it is not a halal statement and this page does not treat it as one. The documents a chain usually uses to declare pork content, enzymes and alcohol, the June 2026 nutrition, ingredient and allergen documents and the April 2025 Canadian Product Claims documents, sit on media.subway.com, which does not open for our tools; nothing on this page rests on them, and a reader can open them from the nutrition hub.

No certifier lists a Subway, and no Canadian store is tagged halal where the UK stores are. On 1 October 2026 the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register, 82 entries read in a rendered browser, and the 34 entries in ISNA Halal's restaurants category named none; HMA's supplier list, last updated September 2017, does not name Subway either. Uber Eats' halal category pages for Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton and DoorDash's Toronto halal page contain no Subway, and the Montreal (1399 Ontario Est) and Calgary (Deerfoot City) store pages carry the platform's standard sandwich description and no halal tag, while Subway listings in the UK on the same platform carry one.

Locations and products

Subway says it has “nearly 3,000 Canadian locations” on its English About Us page and “près de 3 000 restaurants” on the French one; that is the chain's figure, not ours. Its directory at restaurants.subway.com lists Canada by province and territory with no halal filter. On 1 October 2026 the Mississauga page listed 60 locations and the Oakville page 16, with addresses and hours only. A store page we opened lists its amenities as Order Pick Up, Order Delivery, Catering, In-restaurant dining and Curbside pickup, and its payment types; there is no halal field in that vocabulary.

The menu page shows twelve categories: Grilled Chicken, Sandwiches, Everyday Value, Power Bowls, Snackwiches, Wraps, Salads, Snacks & Sides, Breakfast, Soups, Drinks and Quick Add On. The home page promoted Grilled Chicken Footlongs in Hot Honey and Caesar Bacon builds and a SubDog section. The new-allergens page gives the Hot Dog's ingredient statement beginning “Beef,” notes that Crispy Chicken contains barley, soy and wheat and that Steak may contain soy, wheat, egg and milk, and says some of these ingredients are being tested in select stores.

Nothing on any of these pages says that any sandwich, protein or location is halal. If a Subway near you advertises halal on its own sign or delivery listing, that is the franchisee's claim, not the chain's, and this page does not track it. Ask that restaurant for its current certificate and the supplier it names.

Certification, ingredients and preparation

An unclear status does not mean the food is not halal. It records that Subway's only statement about Canada is a 2014 relayed email saying it had no halal plans here, that nothing since contradicts it, and that no certifier lists a Canadian Subway.

A sourcing claim is not a halal claim. “Canadian farm-raised” describes where the chicken, turkey and pork come from; it says nothing about slaughter, supplier or certification, and this page does not read a halal position into it. In the same way, the portal's question about pork-free menu items is not a halal question, and its answer, a pointer to the nutrition page, names no item.

The ingredient documents are where a chain declares pork content, gelatin, enzymes in cheese and alcohol in sauces; Subway Canada's sit on media.subway.com, linked from this page but not quoted on it, so this page says only that the species of the bacon, ham and pepperoni and the enzymes in the cheeses are not stated on any page we read.

The one shared-preparation line we did read, on the new-allergens page, is an allergen notice: items may come in contact with other items containing egg, fish, dairy, peanut, sesame, shellfish, soy, wheat, sulfites or mustard. It is not a halal segregation statement. In Britain, by contrast, Subway UK tells customers it provides halal meat at some restaurants and offers a store-finder filter; that is the British operator's arrangement and does not apply here.

Statements from the United Kingdom (not Canada) do not apply here. Search results surface a 2022 reply from Subway UK's account saying that some UK restaurants provide halal meat; we could not open the post, so it is not cited, and Subway's UK halal page returned a not-found page on 1 October 2026. Whatever Subway says in the United Kingdom says nothing about Canada and forms no part of this answer.

What Subway has not said, and what to check before ordering

Not said by Subway Canada as of 1 October 2026: whether any Canadian restaurant serves halal meat; whether its Canadian ingredient guide, allergen list or Canadian Product Claims documents say anything about halal, kosher or supplier certification; which supplier provides the chicken, turkey and steak; what species the bacon, ham, pepperoni and salami are; whether any cheese or sauce contains animal rennet, gelatin or alcohol; and whether franchisees may source halal meats or advertise halal locally.

Before ordering, ask the restaurant directly whether its meats are halal and which supplier and certifier stand behind them; ask to see the certificate and check its date and the supplier named on it. Remember that pork is a listed protein and that no Subway Canada page we could read describes any separation of ingredients or equipment.
