Is Mr Sub halal in Canada?

What the evidence supports

What this means before you order

Nobody has said. Mr Sub's Canadian website, read on 1 October 2026 more widely than before, contains no halal statement: not on the home page, the menu index or the Classic Deli and Clubhouse pages, not on the ingredients page, not on the nutrition and allergens page or in the June 2025 and Rib Sub nutrition documents it links, not on the contact page, and not on the locator or the store page we opened.

The word kosher does not appear either. The chain has no FAQ; that address returns a not-found page. Its only sourcing wording is a home-page banner, “Meats Raised Without Antibiotics,” and the Grilled Chicken's “All white meat Canadian farm raised chicken strips.” No supplier, certifier or slaughter method is named. No Canadian certifier register we could read lists a Mr Sub or MTY.

This is an absence of any statement, not a statement that the food is not halal.

What the chain's own pages say matters for a halal diet. The Classic Deli menu carries black forest ham, salami and luncheon meat, on the Assorted Sub, Ham Sub, Pizza Sub and Italian Salami; the Clubhouse menu carries bacon on four subs, including the Major Bacon Sub with “12 strips of bacon”; the nutrition tables name sausage and meatballs, and a Rib Sub has its own document.

No page or document states the species of any of them; the word pork does not occur because the nutrition documents are tables without ingredient statements. The ingredients page lists seven cheeses with no enzyme or rennet wording and a “Forty Creek Whisky BBQ” sauce whose alcohol content is not stated. The nutrition page warns of traces of allergens from a manufacturing facility or from preparation on site.

If a Mr Sub near you advertises halal, that is a local claim; ask for the certificate and the supplier.

Suppliers and preparation can change. Confirm the current halal information with the specific restaurant before ordering.

What official sources establish

Mr Sub has said nothing about halal that we could find. On 1 October 2026 we read mrsub.ca more widely than at the earlier check: the home page, the menu index with its eleven categories and the Classic Deli and Clubhouse pages, the ingredients page, the nutrition and allergens page and two of the documents it links, the contact page, and the locator at locations.mrsub.ca with one store page.

The words halal and kosher appear on none of them. The site has no FAQ; that address returns a not-found page. The chain's only sourcing wording is a home-page banner, “Meats Raised Without Antibiotics,” the ingredients page's “we take such care when selecting all of our vegetables and meats,” and the Grilled Chicken's “All white meat Canadian farm raised chicken strips.”

No supplier, certifier or slaughter method is named anywhere.

The nutrition documents are the chain's national documents, and they are tables, not ingredient lists. The June 2025 nutrition facts document is marked inside “Updated: January 2020”; it names ham, salami, luncheon meat, bacon, steak, chicken, turkey, roast beef, meatballs, sausage, seafood and tuna, and a “Forty Creek Whisky BBQ” sauce, and the words halal, kosher, pork, gelatin, enzyme and rennet do not occur in it.

A separate document covers a limited-time Rib Sub, as a large, a small and a wrap, without saying what the rib is. Both carry a disclaimer naming MTY Tiki Ming Enterprises Inc., while the site footer says “MR.SUB is a division of MTY Franchising Inc.” A third document linked from the nutrition page, dated 2019, is a dead link, and a fourth, dated March 2026, was not opened.

No certifier lists a Mr Sub. On 1 October 2026 the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register and ISNA Halal's restaurant directory named none, HMA's supplier list of September 2017 names neither Mr Sub nor MTY, and CHFCA's directory would not load. Absence from a register is not a finding about the food.

Locations and products

We could not count the restaurants: the locator's list loads dynamically, and its sitemap, updated on 1 October 2026, truncated in our reader after about 300 store pages, overwhelmingly in Ontario with small numbers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. The chain's own wording is “hundreds of locations throughout Canada.” The store page we opened, 570 Westney Road South in Ajax, shows pickup, catering, delivery through SkipTheDishes, app ordering, hours and phone; there is no halal note and no halal filter.

The menu index lists eleven categories, from Premium subs to Salads & Sides. Ham, salami and luncheon meat are on the Classic Deli subs (Assorted, Ham, Pizza, Italian Salami); bacon is on four Clubhouse subs, the Major Bacon Sub carrying “12 strips of bacon” in a large; sausage and meatballs appear in the nutrition tables; a Rib Sub is a limited-time item. Chicken, steak, roast beef, turkey, seafood and tuna are the other proteins. Nothing on the site says any of them is halal, and no page states what animal the ham, salami, bacon, sausage or rib comes from.

If a Mr Sub near you advertises halal on its own sign or delivery listing, that is the franchisee's claim, not the chain's, and this page does not track it. One customer review on a Scarborough delivery listing, read on 1 October 2026, says “Halal is always good”; the listing itself carries no halal tag, and a reviewer's remark is not a statement by anyone answerable for the food. Ask that restaurant for its current certificate and the supplier it names, and check the date.

Certification, ingredients and preparation

An unclear status is not a finding that the food is not halal. It records that Mr Sub has made no statement, that no certifier lists it, and that the chain gives customers no FAQ in which to look. The silence is now supported by a wide read of the chain's site rather than a narrow one.

A missing word is not a missing fact. The nutrition documents never say pork because they never say what any meat is; ham, salami, bacon, luncheon meat, sausage and rib are named by product, not by animal. The absence of the word pork is a limit of the documents, not evidence about the food.

Shared ownership is not a shared policy. MTY Franchising Inc. owns many brands; whatever another MTY brand says about halal is that brand's statement for that brand, and nothing on mrsub.ca adopts it. This page uses only what Mr Sub itself publishes.

Removing the ham does not answer the question. The chicken, steak and roast beef are not described by slaughter method or supplier; the seven cheeses are listed without enzyme or rennet wording; the “Forty Creek Whisky BBQ” sauce is named without its alcohol content; and the nutrition page warns of traces from preparation on site. Those are questions for the restaurant and for the standard of the certifier you trust.

What Mr Sub has not said, and what to check before ordering

Not said by Mr Sub as of 1 October 2026: whether it or MTY has a written halal position for its Canadian restaurants; whether any franchisee may source halal meats or advertise halal locally; what animal the ham, salami, luncheon meat, bacon, sausage and rib products come from; who supplies the chicken, steak and roast beef and whether any supplier holds a halal certificate; whether the whisky-named sauce contains alcohol as served; and what enzymes are in the cheeses.

Before ordering, ask the restaurant directly whether its meats are halal and which supplier and certifier stand behind them; ask to see the certificate and check its date and the supplier named on it. Remember that ham, salami and bacon of unstated species share the counter with everything else.
