In Ontario, yes on KFC Canada's own word. Its letter of 8 May 2024 to community leaders, which we read in the copy shared publicly in July 2024, says all chicken products at Ontario restaurants outside Thunder Bay and Ottawa have been halal certified since 15 May 2024, that pork was discontinued except at Taco Bell co-branded restaurants, and that the rest of Canada would follow by year-end.

A national chain that puts that in writing on its own letterhead is answerable for it, so we report it as KFC's statement and treat it as standing: nothing since contradicts or withdraws it. Outside Ontario, and in Thunder Bay and Ottawa, ask the restaurant.

The letter names Maple Lodge Farms, whose Zabiha Halal brand says it is certified by the Canadian Halal Food Certifying Agency and the Halal Monitoring Organization and uses machine slaughter with gas stunning and Muslim blessers. That is supplier-level certification of the chicken, not certification of any KFC restaurant, and KFC appears on no Canadian certifier register we read. On 15 September 2026 kfc.ca said nothing about halal or pork anywhere we looked: its FAQ, read in full, its menu, its site map and its restaurant pages.

The chicken-sourcing page that existed in 2024 is gone. KFC has said nothing since 2024 about the national rollout it promised, so outside Ontario we cannot say either way, and nothing shows Ontario changed back.

Suppliers and preparation can change. Confirm the current halal information with the specific restaurant before ordering.

What official sources establish

The primary document is a letter from KFC Canada dated 8 May 2024, shown above. It sits on Kentucky Fried Chicken Canada Company letterhead with a Vaughan, Ontario address, opens Dear Community Leaders, and is headed KFC Canada launching Halal Certified Chicken in Ontario. It is signed by the company's research and development and operations manager. We read it on 15 September 2026 in the copy reproduced as an image in a public X post of 6 July 2024; KFC Canada has not published the letter itself, and the outlets that quoted it in July and August 2024 match the image.

We take a national chain at its word when it puts a halal claim in writing over its own letterhead: the company is answerable for the statement, and it would have to withdraw it if it were untrue. So this page reports the letter as KFC Canada's statement and treats it as standing. Nothing we found contradicts it: no certifier has disputed it, no report describes a reversal, and kfc.ca lists no pork items. What the letter does not settle, it does not settle, and we say so below.

The letter says that effective 15 May 2024, across Ontario excluding Thunder Bay and Ottawa, “all chicken products are Halal Certified including but not limited to: chicken on the bone, chicken tenders, popcorn chicken, sandwiches, wings, etc.” It says KFC Canada discontinued pork at all its restaurants except those co-branded with Taco Bell, partnered with halal suppliers such as Maple Lodge Farms (Zabiha Halal), trained Ontario restaurant staff on halal operational procedures, and worked with its Muslim team members on the change, and that Ontario would be “followed by the rest of Canada by year-end.”

It was written to community leaders, not to customers, and it names no certifier of its own.

KFC Canada's own public material says nothing either way. On 15 September 2026 we read the kfc.ca FAQ in full: 35 questions and answers on ordering, payment, delivery and the KFC VIP programme, none mentioning halal, pork or sourcing. The site map listed 992 pages and 297 menu items; no page is about halal and no item is named bacon, pork or ham. Restaurant pages carry hours and phone numbers only. The chicken-sourcing page that existed in 2024 now returns a not-found page. KFC Canada's 2026 press releases, read on 4 August 2026, do not mention halal.

Maple Lodge Farms' Zabiha Halal brand states on its own site that it is “certified by the Canadian Halal Food Certifying Agency and the Halal Monitoring Organization,” with certificates it dates to the end of 2026 and 2027, and that it uses “precision machine and gas stunning” while Muslim blessers recite the blessing. That is a statement about the supplier's plant and product; it is not a certificate for any KFC restaurant. KFC does not appear on the registers of the Halal Monitoring Authority (82 restaurants, 23 suppliers), ISNA Canada or CHEC, read on 15 September 2026.

Locations and products

Per the letter: Ontario restaurants except Thunder Bay and Ottawa, from 15 May 2024; KFC restaurants co-branded with Taco Bell kept pork. A Huntsville franchise told a local outlet in July 2024 that it had been serving halal-certified chicken for over a month. The national rollout the letter promised for year-end 2024 is not documented anywhere we could find, in KFC material, in reporting or on certifier registers, and KFC has not said whether it happened.

So the statement we can pass on covers Ontario. KFC Canada publishes no list of restaurants, its restaurant pages say nothing about halal, and no certifier register names a KFC restaurant, so outside Ontario, and in Thunder Bay and Ottawa, ask before you order.

The claim covered chicken products. The letter says pork was discontinued at standalone restaurants and that staff were trained on halal procedures; it does not address sauces, sides, the fryers or storage.

Certification, ingredients and preparation

A certified supplier is not a certified restaurant. The 2024 claim rests on Maple Lodge Farms' certification of its chicken; no body has published a certificate covering a KFC kitchen, its handling or its other ingredients, and the letter itself names no certifier.

A chain's statement is taken at its word; a chain's plan is not a statement. The Ontario change was put in writing and confirmed by several outlets and a franchisee; the national extension was a plan for year-end 2024, and KFC has not said since whether it was carried out.

A method accepted by one certifier is not agreement among all Muslims. Zabiha Halal describes machine slaughter with gas stunning and says its certifiers accept it; other certifiers and scholars do not accept stunning or machine slaughter. We do not rule between them. Apply the standard of a certifier you trust.

KFC's UK halal page describes a UK supply chain certified by the Halal Food Authority at around 200 UK restaurants. It says nothing about Canada and forms no part of the answer here.

What KFC has not said, and what to check before ordering

Not said by KFC Canada as of 15 September 2026: whether the national rollout promised for year-end 2024 happened; whether Thunder Bay and Ottawa remain excluded; whether the supplier is still Maple Lodge Farms; and any of this to customers on kfc.ca rather than in a letter to community leaders.

Before ordering, ask the restaurant whether its chicken is halal-certified today and who the supplier is, and whether it shares a kitchen with Taco Bell. If the answer names Maple Lodge Farms or Zabiha Halal, decide for yourself whether that brand's slaughter method meets the standard of a certifier you trust.
