At most of its locations, on Mary Brown's own word. The chain's store locator carries a Halal tag beside each location that has it, in the same row as Delivery, Drive-thru and the delivery apps. On 16 September 2026 we read all 304 Canadian locations listed there: 181 carry the tag and 123 do not. A national chain that publishes a per-location halal tag on its own site is answerable for it, so we report it as Mary Brown's statement for those 181 locations and treat it as standing until the chain removes it.

The other 123 carry no such statement. The chain's chief marketing officer, Jeff Barlow, told CBC News in February 2024: “whenever possible, when we source our chicken, if there's a halal option available we'll opt for it.”

What the tag does not give you: a definition, a supplier or a certificate. Mary Brown's does not say anywhere on its site what Halal on the locator means, whether it covers every menu item or the chicken alone, who supplies the chicken to the tagged locations or how it is slaughtered. No Canadian certifier lists a Mary Brown's restaurant.

In 2024, CBC Marketplace visited two GTA locations undercover; at both, staff showed a supplier's halal certificate as if it certified the whole restaurant, and one of the eight expired certificates the programme was shown was at a Mary Brown's. Mary Brown's told CBC it would continue to educate front-line staff. Check the locator for your location, then ask the counter which supplier and certifier stand behind the chicken that day.

Suppliers and preparation can change. Confirm the current halal information with the specific restaurant before ordering.

What official sources establish

Mary Brown's statement is a tag, not a paragraph. Its store locator at marybrowns.com/locations lists every Canadian location with a row of service labels: Delivery, Skip the Dishes, DoorDash, Drive-thru, Walmart Location and, where the chain applies it, Halal. On 16 September 2026 we read the full list of 304 locations. The tag appears on 181 and is absent from 123. Two Mississauga entries are shown below as the site rendered them that day: Dixie & Dundas, tagged, and Heartland, not tagged.

We take a national chain at its word when it publishes a halal claim in its own name: the company is answerable for it and would have to remove it if it were untrue. So this page reports the tag as Mary Brown's statement for each location that carries it, and reports its absence as the chain saying nothing about the others. The chain has not defined the tag anywhere we could read, so what it covers, the chicken, the whole menu, the fryers, is the chain's to say and it has not said.

The company has explained the pattern once, in its own words. In February 2024 its chief marketing officer, Jeff Barlow, told CBC News that halal is wanted in “pockets of populations” across the country and that “whenever possible, when we source our chicken, if there's a halal option available we'll opt for it,” adding that the aim was to give more choices.

CBC reported that the Mary Brown's Express in Memorial University's food court in St. John's has served halal chicken since it opened. That is a description of a sourcing preference by location, not a national commitment, and it matches what the locator shows: most of Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia tagged, Atlantic Canada not, the university outlet aside.

Nothing else on the site addresses halal. We fetched all 44 pages in the site's sitemaps, the about, menu, FAQ, franchising, catering and community pages among them, and the word appears only in the locator. The FAQ page is about the app and payments. The about page describes the chicken as Canada Grade A, delivered whole and fresh, marinated and hand-breaded in each store, and says the chain sources its chicken and potatoes from Canadian farmers; it names no supplier and no slaughter method.

No certifier lists a Mary Brown's restaurant. On 16 September 2026 the Halal Monitoring Authority's certified-restaurant register, CHEC's certified-restaurant list and the entries ISNA Halal's directory displayed named none. Whatever certificate a tagged location holds is a supplier's certificate for the chicken, which is what CBC Marketplace was shown at both locations it visited in 2024.

Locations and products

By province, from the locator on 16 September 2026: Ontario 96 of 135 locations tagged; Alberta 48 of 52; British Columbia 26 of 31; Saskatchewan 6 of 8; Manitoba 5 of 15. None of the 39 locations in Newfoundland and Labrador, the chain's home province, carries the tag, and none of the 14 in Nova Scotia, 7 in New Brunswick, 2 in Prince Edward Island or the one in Yellowknife.

In the Greater Toronto Area most locations are tagged, not all. Tagged in Mississauga: Dixie & Dundas, Dixie & Eglinton, Erin Mills and Erin Woods; not tagged: Heartland and Pearson Airport Terminal 3. In Toronto, Bloor Street West, Spadina and Yonge-Dundas are not tagged while Dufferin, Dixon, Danforth, Leaside, Queen Street West, Sheppard, Stockyards, Dufferin & Steeles, both Ellesmere Road locations and Eglinton East are. In Brampton, Mayfield Road is not tagged; Gateway, Hurontario, Kennedy Road, Lionhead and Fletcher's Meadow are. Tags can change; check the locator on the day.

Mary Brown's sells bone-in chicken, the Big Mary chicken sandwich, tenders, wings, taters, gravy and coleslaw. The tag is per location, not per product. Whether it covers the gravy, the sauces or the fryers is not stated, and no certificate covers a kitchen.

Certification, ingredients and preparation

A locator tag is not a certificate. Mary Brown's says 181 locations are halal; no certifier has published a certificate for any Mary Brown's kitchen. Marketplace's finding that none of the ten restaurants it visited is a certified restaurant is consistent with that, and it is why this page rests on the chain's word.

A supplier's certificate is not the restaurant's. At both Mary Brown's locations CBC visited, staff presented a meat supplier's certificate as if it certified the whole restaurant. HMA's Imam Omar Subedar told CBC that presenting a supplier document that way is “very unfortunate” and “prevalent in the industry,” and that a restaurant is certified only when every ingredient is checked and no pork or alcohol is on the premises. A tagged location's other ingredients have not been audited by anyone who has published the result.

Slaughter method is unstated. Mary Brown's has not said whether the chicken at its tagged locations is hand- or machine-slaughtered, and has named no supplier or certifier. We do not rule between schools of thought; if the method matters to you, ask which supplier the location uses today and apply the standard of a certifier you trust.

An expired certificate is a paperwork failure, not proof that the meat was not halal. One of the eight expired certificates Marketplace was shown was at a Mary Brown's. It says nothing about the chicken that day; it does say the paper you are shown at a counter may be out of date.

What Mary Brown's has not said, and what to check before ordering

Not said by Mary Brown's as of 16 September 2026: what the Halal tag on its locator covers; who supplies the chicken to tagged locations and which body certifies that supplier; whether the chicken is hand- or machine-slaughtered; why the tag is absent from every location in Atlantic Canada; and any of this in a sentence on marybrowns.com rather than a tag.

Before ordering, open the locator and find your location; if it carries the tag, ask the counter which supplier the chicken comes from and to show you the current certificate, and check the date on it. If the location is not tagged, Mary Brown's has said nothing about it.
