Is it halal? Canada

Is Wendy's halal in Canada?

In-store claim not confirmed by the named certifier

Decals reported at Ontario Wendy's in May 2026 say the chicken is produced in a halal facility certified by AMCVH and HMA. HMA answered on 28 May 2026 that it certifies no Wendy's location and does not verify Wendy's sourcing. AMCVH publishes no client list, and Wendy's Canada has published nothing. The claim stands unconfirmed rather than contradicted.

Documents we read

HMA graphic headed Important Announcement: HMA does not certify or monitor any Wendy's location, and does not verify or take responsibility for the halal status or sourcing of Wendy's
The Halal Monitoring Authority's notice, posted on its own Instagram account on 28 May 2026 and read by us on 15 September 2026.

What this means before you order

Signs in some Ontario Wendy's say the chicken is produced in a halal facility certified by two named bodies. One of them, the Halal Monitoring Authority, posted on 28 May 2026 that it does not certify or monitor any Wendy's location and does not verify or take responsibility for Wendy's halal status or sourcing. The other, AMCVH of Laval, Quebec, publishes no client list. Wendy's Canada had published nothing by 15 September 2026.

The two statements are about different things. The decal claims that a supplier facility is certified; HMA's notice says HMA does not certify or monitor any Wendy's restaurant and does not verify Wendy's sourcing. Both can be true at once, which is why we no longer call this a dispute. What is missing is confirmation: HMA has not said that a plant supplying Wendy's is on its list, AMCVH has confirmed nothing publicly, and Wendy's has named no supplier.

Staff at eleven Mississauga restaurants gave the reporting outlet different answers about who certifies the chicken. Until a certifier or Wendy's puts the claim on the record with a named facility, treat the sign as a claim to check.

Suppliers and preparation can change. Confirm the current halal information with the specific restaurant before ordering.

What official sources establish

Wendy's Canada has published nothing about halal that we could find. On 15 September 2026 the Canadian homepage, the Eglinton Avenue West location page in Mississauga and the customer-care site carried no halal, certification or supplier wording. The decal wording exists only in reporting and in photographs shared on social media; Wendy's has not repeated it on any property of its own.

The Halal Monitoring Authority answered on its own Instagram account on 28 May 2026, with a graphic headed Important announcement. In its words, HMA does not certify or monitor any Wendy's location. The notice goes on to say that HMA does not verify or take responsibility for the halal status or sourcing of Wendy's, or of any other business that is not under HMA's certification and monitoring program, and it points readers to the register on hmacanada.org.

We read the post and the graphic ourselves on 15 September 2026; the notice is shown above. HMA's supplier list, updated August 2026, names six certified poultry plants in Ontario; the decal does not say which plant, if any, supplies Wendy's, and HMA's notice does not say whether any of its plants does.

AMCVH, the second body named, is real: the Association musulmane de la certification des viandes halal, in Laval, Quebec, with an address and phone number on its site. The site describes audit-based certification of meat products and carries no client list, so we can neither confirm nor rule out that it certifies a plant supplying Wendy's.

Locations and products

905HUB reported decals across Mississauga and images circulating GTA-wide, and said that of eleven Mississauga restaurants it called, ten claimed halal chicken while naming different certifiers or none. We have not verified any location ourselves, and we do not know whether the signs are still displayed.

The claim covers chicken products only. Wendy's serves beef and bacon in Canada, and no source describes separate fryers, grills or storage for the chicken. A sign about the chicken is not a statement about the rest of the menu.

Certification, ingredients and preparation

A certified facility and a certified restaurant are different things. A certifier can certify a poultry plant's output without certifying, monitoring or taking responsibility for any restaurant that buys from it. That is exactly the gap between what the decal says and what HMA's notice says, and it is why the two are not in contradiction.

A sign is a claim made by the restaurant. It becomes checkable when it names the facility and the certificate, so that you can find the plant on the certifier's register. Neither the decal nor Wendy's has done that.

Certifiers also differ on slaughter and stunning. No source here describes how the chicken is slaughtered. If a location names its supplier, check that supplier on the certifier's register and apply the standard of a certifier you trust.

What is unresolved, and what to check before ordering

Unresolved on 15 September 2026: which facility supplies the chicken and whether it is on HMA's or AMCVH's books; whether HMA will speak to the facility claim rather than the restaurant claim; whether Wendy's Canada will state its position; which locations carry the signs today; and how the chicken is slaughtered and handled.

Before ordering, ask the restaurant to name the supplier and show the certificate the sign refers to, then check that supplier on the certifier's register. Ask whether the chicken is cooked apart from bacon and beef. If the answer is the sign and nothing more, you have a claim, not a confirmation.

Wendy's halal FAQs

Is Wendy's halal in Canada?

Wendy's Canada has not said. Signs reported at Ontario locations in May 2026 say the chicken is produced in a halal facility certified by AMCVH and HMA. HMA posted on 28 May 2026 that it certifies no Wendy's location and does not verify Wendy's sourcing, and AMCVH publishes no client list. As of 15 September 2026 the claim is unconfirmed by either named certifier.

Is this a dispute between Wendy's and HMA?

Not on the statements we have. The sign claims a supplier facility is certified; HMA's notice says it does not certify any Wendy's restaurant and does not verify Wendy's sourcing. Those can both be true. What is missing is a named facility that appears on a certifier's register, and neither Wendy's nor either certifier has provided one.

Does the sign in my local Wendy's settle it?

No. A sign is a claim made by the restaurant. It becomes checkable when the restaurant names the supplier and the certificate, so you can find the plant on the certifier's register. HMA's supplier list, updated August 2026, names six poultry plants; the sign does not say which one, if any, supplies Wendy's.

Which menu items does the claim cover?

Chicken products only, according to the decal wording reported on 29 May 2026. Wendy's sells beef and bacon in Canada, and no source describes separate fryers, grills or storage for the chicken. Nothing published says the whole menu is halal.

Is the chicken hand-slaughtered?

No source addresses it. The decal names two certifiers and no slaughter method, HMA's notice does not speak to the facility, and AMCVH has said nothing publicly. Certifiers differ on slaughter and stunning, so the answer depends on which plant supplies the chicken and which body certifies it, and that has not been disclosed.

Where can I eat halal burgers or chicken instead?

Halal Food Pass lists halal restaurants across Canada by city and cuisine, each with the halal information the restaurant or a certifier has given us and the date we recorded it. Browse all restaurants and confirm current details with the restaurant before you go.

When was this page last checked?

On 15 September 2026 we read HMA's 28 May 2026 Instagram notice, re-read the 29 May 2026 reporting, HMA's restaurant register and supplier list, AMCVH's website, and Wendy's Canadian homepage, a Mississauga location page and the customer-care site. Next review is due on 15 October 2026, or sooner if Wendy's or either certifier publishes anything.

How we checked Wendy's

On 15 September 2026 we read the Halal Monitoring Authority's Instagram post of 28 May 2026 and the graphic it carries, headed Important announcement. We re-read 905HUB's 29 May 2026 report, which quotes the decal and records the outlet's calls to eleven Mississauga restaurants. We read HMA's certified-restaurant register (82 businesses) and its supplier list (23, updated August 2026, six poultry plants); Wendy's is on neither and no supplier entry mentions Wendy's.

We read AMCVH's website, which gives a Laval, Quebec address and phone number and no client list. We read Wendy's Canadian homepage, its Eglinton Avenue West location page in Mississauga and its customer-care site, and found no halal wording. We searched for a Wendy's Canada statement or press release about halal and found none. The 4 August 2026 reads are recorded in our research log.

What we could not check: We have not seen a decal ourselves and do not know whether the signs are still displayed. HMA's notice speaks to Wendy's restaurants and to Wendy's sourcing in general; it does not name any plant, so it neither confirms nor rules out that an HMA-certified facility supplies Wendy's. AMCVH publishes no register, so its half of the claim cannot be checked against a list. Staff answers at different restaurants were reported as inconsistent, so we do not treat any single restaurant's answer as the chain's position. We have not called any restaurant.

  • : Label reworded to in-store claim not confirmed by the named certifier: the decal is a facility claim and HMA's notice is about restaurants and sourcing, so they are not in contradiction. How to read our halal labels

We report what a chain, a named certifier or a specific restaurant says, with the scope of that statement. Halal Food Pass does not certify halal.

A statement about chicken does not automatically cover the whole menu. A supplier certificate does not establish restaurant certification. A lack of published certification does not tell us how animals were slaughtered.

When a chain states publicly that its food is halal, we report that statement as the chain's own word, with its date, its scope and the certifier it names, and we treat it as standing until the chain withdraws it or evidence contradicts it. A claim that rests on unnamed phone calls or an anonymous post is reported as a claim, not as a finding.

Read our halal information policy or learn how to check a restaurant’s halal information.
