Watch: New Ridgeway Plaza Documentary Explores Its Food, People and Community

A new documentary is putting the people behind Mississauga’s Ridgeway Plaza in the spotlight. Meet Me at Ridgeway explores how restaurants and the communities around them have helped turn the plaza into a place of cultural connection.

The short film premiered on October 6, 2026, at the University of Toronto Mississauga’s Kaneff Centre. It is now available on filmmaker Marium Nur Vahed’s YouTube channel.

Sumaq’s co-owner shares a restaurant perspective

CBC’s October 7 coverage identifies Hamzah Al-Ameri, co-owner of Sumaq Iraqi Charcoal Grill, as one of the business owners featured in the film.

According to CBC, Al-Ameri acknowledges problems at the plaza while arguing they should not define its entire reputation. He also describes business owners cooperating on safety and watching for suspicious activity.

His contribution brings a restaurant operator’s perspective into a discussion that affects businesses, customers and nearby residents.

What the premiere discussion added

CBC also reports on the panel held after the screening. Participants considered Ridgeway’s role as a “third place”: somewhere outside home, work or school where people can gather.

The discussion explored what the plaza’s popularity reveals about demand for community spaces, including places where younger residents can spend time later in the evening. It also addressed how public perceptions of Ridgeway can influence decisions about its future.

The filmmakers acknowledged concerns such as congestion and noise while asking what planners could learn from the community that has developed there.
